For HF email you will need a serviceprovider to processyour mail and email and "client
software" to run on your PC. Your serviceprovider typically distributesthe email client
software.The client softwareperformsmost of the configurationsandmodemsettingsto get
you on the air. You will find manypopularsoftwarepackages on the SCS CD-ROM supplied
with your PTC.

The SCS CD-ROM containssoftwareto operate thePTCin variousmodesandimportanthints
and information about the operation of your PTC.
Additionally the CD containsthe driver for the PTC-Ilusb.

The programs
ThePTC offersmany modesof operationof which mostarerelatedto the exchange of text or
data.In addition,picturemodeslike FAX andSSTVaresupported. T o access andoperate your
PTCyou mustrun a softwareprogramon your computer(PC).Although very simpleterminal
software(i.e. WindowsHyperTerminal)will controla PTC, it is much moreconvenient t o use
aprogramwhich hasbeenspeciallycreatedto operate the SCS PTC-II series.
Many of theprogramshavebeenwritten on avoluntarybaseandareavailablefreeof chargeto
all usersand distributed via the Internet. With the permissionof the authors we have included
the programson our SCS CD-ROM. Third party programsare not developedby SCS and
SCS cannotprovide support for them. If you have problems or questionsconcerningthe
programs, p leasecontactthe authordirectly. Table 1 on the next pagegivesyou an overview
on the softwareavailable for specific applications.
We arefrequentlyasked"What is the bestprogramfor the PTC?". This questioncannotbe
answered easily as it is similar to someone asking"What is the bestcar?" or "What is the
best operating system?". It's a question of personal preference and dependson the
application.
If HF email is your applicationfor your PTC, it may not be necessary to studyTable 1. In
most cases,your HF email service provider supplies or recommendsthe appropriate
software for their particular service.
Transceivercontrol is possiblewith the PTC-IIpro, the PTC-IIusb andthe PTC-IInet, not
with the PTC-IIex.
Windows programsusually need Windows 98 or higher.
PlusTermandEasy Transferarethe only programs thathavebeendevelopedby SCS.
The SCS CD-ROM is usually updatedtwice the year. Always check if there is a newer
version of your selectedprogram available from the Internet.
