- It is compulsory to check the suitability of the associated
items that make the safety fall arrest system: full body harness,
connectors...
- Only items complying with European standards can be used.
- Beware of any incompatibility between different components
which could be dangerous for the user. Be particularly cautious
when any components in the system are not totally rigid,
because the locked mechanism can be unlocked by a bounce.
- Before each use make a visual inspection (#3.1) of all the
components of the fall arrest system : fall arrester, webbing,
connectors, full body harness.
• Condition of the anchor element.
• Condition of the housing and its assembly: no deformations, no
cracks, no traces of major impacts, screw tightened.
• Lanyard condition: no cuts or fraying, no traces of chemical
attack, no deformation.
• Condition of the automatic connector: ensure that it locks
properly, that there is no deformation or corrosion, and that the
fall indicator is not activated.
• The validity date of the device must also be checked. The latest
revision must date back to less than one year.
• Before every use, check whether the safety system triggers
properly by pulling sharply on the lanyard. The fall arrester must
lock the lanyard and stop it from unwinding (#3.2). On the other
hand, by pulling the lanyard slowly and steadily, it should unwind
and rewind normally.
WARNING : You should never release the lanyard of the
connector to rewind the lanyard but hold it until fully rewound.
(#3.2).
- Upon noting the slightest defect in the condition or functioning
or if there is any doubt, do not use the device but return it to the
manufacturer or send it to an approved center for its inspection
or repair.
- When the device has stopped a fall, its inspection is required.
In all these cases, the fall arrester should be withdrawn from
circulation and not used again until a competent person has
authorized its reuse in writing.
ANCHORING DEVICE
- Before every use, ensure that the anchor of the fall arrester is
correct. The anchor point to which the fall arrester is hooked, as
well as the parts used for the hooking must be compliant with the
EN 795 standard (#3.5).
- The hooking point must be located above the user for an
exclusively vertical use. If the fall arrester can be employed for
horizontal use (#1-9), see paragraph "Horizontal use approval".
- If the fall arrester is compatible with the usage configuration of
factor 2 (#1-12), the user can go above the anchor point of the
device. However, in case of a fall, the stopping distance and the
maximum effort will be greater. In this usage configuration, the
associated clearance is therefore greater (#1-13).
- The fall arrester must be hooked only using its anchor part (ring,
hole). The fall arrester can't be used by hooking the anchor part
to the harness. Users must pay attention to fact that some
models have a handle made of textile strap. This is not a valid
anchor point (#3.5).
- Only parts that are compliant with the EN 362 and EN 795
standards may be used (connectors, lanyards, slings, etc.).
- The fall arrester must under no circumstances lean on any part
of the structure (#3.8), it must be in line with the anchor and the
hooking point on the user's harness.
- The fall arrester is meant to be used with a fall arrester harness
as the sole gripping means of an individual. This harness must be
compliant with the EN 361 standard, its size must be appropriate
with respect to that of the user, its adjustments and settings must
be correct, the seams, buckles and straps must not show any
signs of deformation, breakage, rust or any other damage (#3.3).
- The connector at the end of the lanyard must be locked
exclusively on the harness ring designed for this purpose (refer
to the instructions for use of the harness, which specify this point).
CONDITIONS OF USE
- In order to optimise the safety conditions during work at
heights, it is important to limit movements as much as possible
and to move at moderate speeds so that the fall arrester can
function under the best possible conditions. To limit swinging, do
not exceed an angle of 30° with respect to the vertical line of the
anchor (#3.6). For a horizontal use, refer to the "Horizontal use"
paragraph below.
- In case of a pendulum fall, the vertical height of the fall is larger
than that of a direct fall. Always remain in level with the anchor
point of the fall arrester and do not travel to a distance more than
half of the height between the anchor point and the work area
(#5).
- Before every use, it is necessary to check whether the free
space below the feet of the fall arrester's user (clearance) is at
least equal to the value specified in the device characteristics
.
(#1)
Ensure that no obstacle is present in the trajectory of a
possible fall.
- The use of the fall arrest system must be done in such a way as
to minimize the risk of fall and the height of fall.
- Do not use above loose materials in which it is possible to be
.
buried (#3.7)
- To maintain the equipment in perfect operating condition, it
must not be used in temperatures that do not fall within the range
of -30°C and +50°C (#3.11).
- Despite the above-average protection of the casing, it is
important to ensure that the fall arrester and especially the
lanyard are not exposed to aggressive environments such as
acids, bases or solvents that may damage the material, especially
if the ambient temperature is high.
- In addition, ensure that the fall arrester is not used with the
lanyard rubbing against sharp or rough edges that may damage
it. Use edge-protection.
- Only for retractable fall arresters made with a Dyneema® strap
lanyard (#1-1=D), the user must not expose the lanyard to a
temperature higher than 140°C. This corresponds to the melting
point of the Dyneema® webbing. This webbing also has a low
coefficient of friction.
- There is a risk of head injury when using a self-retracting fall
arrester in the inverted position (see table #1-15). It is therefore
advisable to wear a suitable protective helmet at the same time.
HORIZONTAL USE APPROVAL
- This fall arrester has been specially tested to ensure that it is
capable of arresting a person falling into empty space from a
horizontal plane.
- Different regulatory tests have proven that the lanyard of this
fall arrester can arrest a fall on a Type A sharp edge without any
additional component. The Type A sharp edge used for the tests
corresponds to the edge of a steel bar with a root fillet radius
of R = 0.5 mm without burrs (#3.9.A). Hence, this device may
be used on any equivalent edge (rolled steel section, wooden
beam, edge of a curved roof, etc.).
SPECIFICATIONS RELATED TO HORIZONTAL USE
- The following comments must be taken into account when the
equipment is used horizontally and when there is a risk of falling
over a sharp edge from a height.
