Use
During the use of the rope, it has to be observed that it is not
damaged by sharp edges, pointed or rough objects, etc. Therefore
rope drag should be avoided. Terminal connections like splices,
seam formers, or pressed ends must only be applied by the
manufacturer. The load capacity and position of the anchor point, at
which the equipment is attached, are essential for safety. When
used for industrial climbing, the anchor point always has to have a
minimum stability of 10 kN (1 t). The position has to be chosen that
way that dangerous falls with subsequent swinging are excluded
(as vertical above the user as possible). Slack ropes (rope sagging)
have to be avoided to keep the fall distance short.
Note on safety
Should the rope have been strained by a heavy fall, it has to be
withdrawn from use as quickly as possible. Please observe that
external impacts like extreme temperatures, chemicals, sharp and
rough edges, moisture and icing, etc. may reduce the stability. Also
protect the rope during transport, e.g. by using equipment bags.
Regular inspections
The rope must be checked for damage before and after each use.
If in doubt about the condition, the rope should be discarded
immediately.
Maintenance and storage
Webbing and ropes can be cleaned with warm water and mild
soaps (we recommend e.g. the special detergent "SKYWASH").
Subsequently rinse well with clear water. Do not dry wet equipment
components in tumble driers or over heat sources, but hang them
up in an airy and shady space. Avoid contact with chemicals, oils,
solvents and other aggressive substances in any case. Storage
should be dry, at room temperature and protected against solar
irradiation, best in equipment bags or cases. If the rope is heavily
soiled we recommend to discard it. For disinfection of static ropes,
use a weak 1% solution of potassium permanganate according to
instructions for use.
Lifetime
The lifetime depends on the individual conditions of use, like type
and frequency of use and external impacts. Under extreme
conditions of use with frequent fall strain, much abseiling work,
frequent top-roping, much dirt (sand, dust) and mechanical
abrasion, the safety reserves of an alpine rope can be worn out that
much after a few weeks of use already, that the rope has to be
discarded. With occasional, proper use and correct storage, a rope
may be used for several years, whereat the textile parts, even with
careful treatment, are subject to an ageing process. A rope that has
been in contact with chemicals, oil, solvents and other aggressive
substances has to be discarded immediately. These substances
