enter avalanche terrain.
d. Red light is solid (1g): SuperCapacitor has a malfunction. Do not enter ava-
lanche terrain. Refer to TROUBLESHOOTING section for further details.
Note: The LED blinking speed indicates that the system is either charging
(four times per second) or is in the ON mode (once every ten seconds).
Check the SuperCapacitor status before you intend to use your Pieps
JetForce SC Backpack, and charge if necessary (refer to SUPERCAPACITOR
CHARGING).
WEARING THE PACK (FIGURE 3)
Proper fit and secure attachment to your body is critical.
1. Put the backpack on your back with both arms through the shoulder
straps.
2. Locate the Leg Strap (3c). Wrap the Leg Strap around the back of your
right leg, then between your legs. Slide the Waist Strap (3e) through the
Leg Strap Loop (3d).
3. Insert the Left-Side Buckle (3a) through the Right-Side Buckle (3b), then
tighten the straps for a secure fit.
4. If the leg strap is too tight or too loose adjust it at the plastic adjustment
buckle at the base of the right hip-belt.
5. Buckle and tighten the Sternum Strap (3f).
6. Adjust the shoulder straps to distribute the load between the shoulders
and waist.
A
WARNING! Do not use the JetForce SC without the Leg Strap (3c). The
Leg Strap prevents the backpack from being ripped off your body
during an avalanche.
ADJUSTING THE DEPLOYMENT HANDLE (FIGURES 8 AND 9)
Proper alignment of the Deployment Handle is critical. Change the position-
ing of the handle according to user's body height (Figure 8). It is possible to
swap the handle from the user's left side to right side (Figure 9).
ARMING THE SYSTEM (FIGURE 1)
A
WARNING! It is critical that the system be armed before entering ava-
lanche terrain.
1. Access the Inflation Unit and locate the Power Knob (1d).
2. Lift up and turn the Power Knob clockwise and hold for 2 seconds.
3. The JetForce SC will auto-test the system to ensure that all components
are functioning correctly.
4. Zip the Inflation Unit Compartment (1k) closed before adding objects into
the backpack.
5. After arming, confirm system status (Figure 7).
DEPLOYING THE AIRBAG (FIGURE 4)
With the system armed (see ARMING THE SYSTEM) and with the backpack
properly worn (see WEARING THE PACK) the airbag can now be deployed.
1. Grasp the Deployment Handle (1c) and firmly pull downward.
2. The airbag will begin to deploy immediately.
3. The Inflation Unit will run for 6 seconds and then shut off.
REPACKING (FIGURE 5)
1. Before repacking, the airbag must be fully deflated.
2. To manually deflate the airbag:
a. Locate the Air Release Knob (1n).
b. Press and turn the Air Release Knob (1n) counter-clockwise to open the
valve, then compress the airbag to squeeze out the remaining air.
3. Locate the Airbag Pocket Zipper Pull (5a) and move it to the wearer's left
side of the pack.
4. Follow the illustrations to re-fold the airbag and place it into the Airbag
Pocket (1i).
5. Close the Main Cargo Compartment (1a)
6. Locate the Airbag Pocket Zipper Pull (5a), connect the zipper ends
together and zip closed.
7. Close the zipper all the way to the bottom of the wearer's right side of the
pack.
8. Close the hook and loop fastener tab over the red part of the Zipper (5b).
WARNING! It is imperative that nothing blocks the zipper or hook and
A
loop fastener for the airbag to fully deploy.
WARNING! Do not roll or twist the airbag while folding it.
A
WARNING! Do not pack airbag behind the Support Straps (9a) within
A
Airbag Pocket (1i).
WARNING! Do not strap anything across the Airbag Pocket (1i).
A
DISARMING THE SYSTEM
Be sure to disarm/turn off the JetForce SC system when not in use.
1. Access the Inflation Unit and locate the Power Knob (1d).
2. Lift up and turn the Power Knob clockwise and hold for 2 seconds.
3. The red System Status Light (1g) will come on then off again to signal the
system is turned off.
HOW TO REMOVE THE DETACHABLE AIRBAG SYSTEM (FIGURE 10)
1. Disarm the system (refer to DISARMING THE SYSTEM), open the Airbag
Pocket (1i), and detach all four of the numbered Airbag Attachment Hooks
(10a).
2. Open the Main Cargo Compartment (1a), the Inflation Unit (1j), and the
Deployment Handle Pocket (1b).
3. Detach the Deployment Handle (refer to Figure 9) and push the
Deployment Handle into the Airbag Pocket.
4. Remove the Inflation Unit while pulling the airbag and Deployment Handle
through the hole at the top of the Inflation Unit Compartment (1k)
HOW TO INSTALL THE DETACHABLE AIRBAG SYSTEM (FIGURE 10)
1. Reverse the steps from HOW TO REMOVE THE DETACHABLE AIRBAG
SYSTEM.
2. Attach all 4 of the Airbag Attachment Hooks (10a). Match the numbers on
the Airbag (1q) with the numbers on each of the Airbag Attachment Hooks
(10a).
3. Close the Inflation Unit Compartment (1j), fold the airbag (refer to
REPACKING), and attach the Deployment Handle (Figure 8).
INTERFERENCE WARNINGS
All avalanche beacons are very sensitive to electrical and magnetic influence.
This JetForce avalanche airbag backpack is designed to minimize interfer-
ence, but it is the user's responsibility to follow some basic best practices:
Avoid carrying unnecessary electronics.
A
A
Maximize distance between the beacon and any other sources of
electronic, magnetic, and metallic interference (such as phones, smart
watches, radios, heated garments, and electronic airbags).
A
A minimum distance of 20 cm for a beacon in SEND mode and 50 cm in
SEARCH mode is recommended.
A
When in SEND mode, carry the beacon on the front side of your body to
maximize the distance between the beacon and the Jetforce pack inflation
unit.
A
When searching, maximize distance from the Jetforce pack by holding the
beacon in a partially outstretched arm in front of your body.
A
Advanced planning should be considered to ensure that smart watches,
heated gloves, and similar items that are likely to remain very close to a
searching beacon are kept at least 50 cm away.
A
All device firmware should be kept current.
A
Refer to your specific beacon manual for interference best practices.
SPECIFIC WARNINGS!
A
Install airbag before entering avalanche terrain. Use only with Alpride E1
Airbag system.
A
Disarm the system and stow the Deployment Handle (1c) before riding a
ski lift, tram, airplane, helicopter, snowcat or vehicle and before entering
small, confined spaces.
A
When the JetForce SC's Inflation Unit is running, the system may interfere
with avalanche beacons.
A
Do not store any items in the Airbag Pocket (1i). Small items might damage
or stop the Inflation Unit.
A
Modifying the product in any way, using the design for unintended pur-
poses, or failing to read and follow any of the instructions may result in
serious injury or death.
Disarm the JetForce SC and stow the Deployment Handle (1c) before ship-
A
ping or storing the device.
Always check the Inflation Unit (1j) for a pulsing green light (1e) when
A
approaching avalanche terrain.
As with all protective equipment, it is important to practice its use to
A
ensure that you are capable of using it properly when necessary.
We strongly discourage acquiring second-hand equipment. To fully trust
A
your gear, you must know its history of use.
Only charge the SuperCapacitors using the provided Micro USB Charging
A
Cable (1m).
Do not submerge the system in water.
A
Do not crush, puncture or subject the SuperCapacitors (1l) or Inflation Unit
A
(1j) to excessive mechanical shock or vibration.
A
Do not subject the Pieps JetForce SC Backpack to temperatures higher
than 55° C [130°F].
A
Do not attempt to disassemble the Inflation Unit or SuperCapacitors.
A
Physical damage to the JetForce SC system, Inflation Unit(1j), or
SuperCapacitors (1l) may result in non-function, excessive heat, or fire.
A
The Pieps JetForce SC Backpack will not increase survivability outside of
the intended application and design.
A
This pack should be used along with other avalanche safety gear including
an avalanche beacon, shovel and probe.
A
Do not allow this device or any other protective equipment to change your
perception about the dangers of avalanches.
