Safety Instructions
Please respect all instructions of this manual. All texts marked with this symbol should have
your particular attention. They are indications of particular importance for the operation of the
system and for your safety.
The use of the autopilot system does not relieve you of the responsibility for your ship, and requires good
seamanship.
Always rely on your nautical experience for the interpretation of the indicated values.
Safety Instructions for Operation:
The autopilot system must not be unmonitored during operation.
Switch the autopilot off and secure it against unintended operation if you are led to assume that safe ope-
ration is no longer possible.
Safe operation is no longer possible if:
- the autopilot system shows visible signs of damage,
- the autopilot system no longer works properly,
- error messages are displayed but the cause(s) cannot be removed.
The helmsman is responsible for starting and stopping the autopilot and the only person authorised to do so.
During pilot operation, do not reach through the wheel to change the throttle lever position, for example.
Keep out of the reach of the tiller. If at all possible, tip the tiller up when the autopilot is on.
Do not use the autopilot in narrow waters, in dense traffic or near high-voltage power cables.
Safety Instructions for Maintenance:
Only specialists authorised by VDO Kienzle are to repair the autopilot system components. The VDO auto-
pilot system complies with the applicable safety precautions regulations.
Conductive parts may become accessible when removing covers. Connecting elements may also carry vol-
tage. Disconnect the device from all power sources prior to carrying out any preventive or corrective main-
tenance or exchanging parts if the device needs to be opened.
Only specialists instructed in handling the possible hazards and complying with the applicable regulations
are allowed to carry out preventive or corrective maintenance of an open device supplied with voltage.
Caution: Even after disconnecting the device from all power sources, the capacitors inside may still be char-
ged.
Make sure to only replace fuses by components of the same type and the specified rated amperage. It is not
permissible to use provisionally repaired fuses or to bypass the fuse holder.
Always disconnect the PILOT BOX from the on-board electrical system prior to replacing its fuses. When
you have disconnected the unit from the on-board mains, remove the blown fuse and replace it by a fuse of
the same type. Restart the autopilot only after the PILOT BOX has been properly closed and all screws pro-
perly put back in.
