3.10 Calibration errors

A calibration error can have many causes:
You used the same buffer solution twice
for calibration. Correct calibration can be
achieved only by using two different buff-
er solutions. The first is of pH 7 and the
second of pH 4.
The measuring cable was connected
wrongly. The pH probe must be connect-
ed to the left-hand socket
The buffer solutions are foul. Try again
with fresh buffer solutions
The measuring cable is defective or not
connected. Please check the connection
between electrode and control unit
Die pH probe is worn out. The life-span
of a measuring electrode depends on the
care given to it and on water quality
3.11 Cleaning, storage and durability
The measuring probes must be inspected visual-
ly (ca once a month) and cleaned if necessary. If
you cannot remove contamination of the glass
membrane using a soft, damp cloth, you can use
the following cleaning fluids.
General deposits: Non-abrasive household
cleaner
Calcium furring or metal hydroxides : diluted
hydrochloric acid (ca. 0,1%-3%) / 1-5
min
Oils and fats: Solvents such as alcohol and ace-
tone
Biological deposits: Solution of diluted hydro-
chloric acid and pepsin/several hours;
solvents (eg acetone) must not be used to
clean electrodes with plastic shaft as the
shaft can be attacked by such solvents.
Please rinse adequately after each cleaning.
If the ceramic diaphragm of the reference sys-
tem mounted on the side is blocked, you can
clean it in the same way as for the glass mem-
brane: you can also scrape carefully at it with
your fingernail, a razor blade or a fine file.
Please ensure at all times that you do not scratch
the glass membrane.
The probes must be stored moist at all times.
To do this, pour some 3- molar KCL solution
into the protective cap and screw onto the
probe.
Caution: Electrodes have a limited shelf life, so
keeping them in stock for more than 3 months
is not recommended.
Caution: Do not rinse using distilled water as
this can lead to premature ageing and defects of
the reference system.
Inspect the probes visually for trapped air bub-
bles. If any air bubbles are present, you can re-
move them by shaking them down, as for a clin-
ical thermometer.
Even when handled correctly, the measuring
probes are subject to natural ageing. Depending
on how the probes are used, their life-span var-
ies from 6 months to 3 years.
Note: Measuring probes are spare parts!
