12. Explanation of terms

DCF-77 - DCF-77 is a time signal transmitter, operating on the long wave with a
range of approx. 1500 km. It is located at Mainflingen (Frankfurt/M). The transmit-
ter transmits a time signal that is provided by the Physikalisch-Technische
Bundesanstalt (Federal Physical Engineering Institute) in Braunschweig, Germany
as so-called atomic time, which has a time deviation of less than 1 s in 1 million
years. Astronomical related time corrections, leap years and date changes are au-
tomatically implemented by time telegrams.
Sensed temperature - see Windchill
Dew point - Temperature value that is dependent on the coincidence of a particu-
lar temperature and a particular humidity. At this temperature humidity begins to
condense, the so-called dew point, the humidity condenses and precipitates as a
liquid.
Weather tendency - forecast display using weather symbols, calculated from the
speed at which the air pressure rises or falls.
Wind chill equivalent temperature (sensed temperature) – A fictitious tempera-
ture, which the human body feels under certain conditions instead of the measured
temperature, and which can be engendered by low temperatures, i.e. how com-
fortable one feels at certain temperatures and wind speeds whilst wearing appro-
priate clothing. These conditions are a temperature below 33 ˚C and a wind speed
higher than 2.6 m/s. Wind chill is defined as the cooling effect of uncovered skin at
an assumed constant 33 ˚C skin surface temperature.
The "sensed temperature" is essentially similar to the felt temperature, which takes
into account the radiation effect of the sun, light refection from the clouds , the light
wavelength, etc.
Air pressure tendency - Calculated from recent developments in air pressure val-
ues.
