5.2. Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Can I also use ATA/100, ATA/66 and ATA/33 hard disks in an array?
Answer:
Yes, the RAID controller is downward compatible; via adapter older
devices can be operated as well. With regard to performance however,
a mixed use is not recommended.
Question: If I use a DC-154 RAID, must I de-activate the on board IDE controllers?
Answer:
No, the DC-154 RAID has been conceived so that it can be operated
without any problems in parallel to the on board controllers.
Question: If I wish to partition an array of two 60 GByte drives under Windows 98,
why does FDISK indicate only 51 GByte instead of 120 GByte?
Answer:
This is an incorrect FDISK message which can be ignored. If you format
the array in the explorer, the entire 120 GByte are addressable.
Question: Can I use an array created by a different controller?
Answer:
No, unless you use the same model. The adjustments by different
manufacturers are not identical and compatible with each other. You have
to create a new array. In the case of a RAID 0, this will lead to a complete
loss of data!
Question: Can I use an array created on the same controller model?
Answer:
Yes, you can.
Question: How can I low-level format my hard disks?
Answer:
Via the menu item "Low Level Format" in the DC-154 RAID BIOS. In the
case of a strikingly high number of defective sectors however, it is
advisable to take your hard disk to your local dealer.
Question: I would like to boot from the DC-154 RAID, which adjustments must I make
in the main board BIOS?
Answer:
Make sure the boot sequence specifies "SCSI". If you use a SCSI
controller at the same time and you want to boot from the DC-154 RAID,
you must install the RAID controller card so that the RAID controller BIOS
initializes first.
