7.3.
Installing the bubble counter (chap. 5.7)
UK
Choose a suitable place that you can observe comfortably and install the bubble counter there (chap. 5.7.). The bubble counter can either be at-
tached with suction cups (e.g. on the outside of the aquarium) or to a wall or furniture surface with the enclosed screws. Cut the CO₂ hose (chap. 5.6)
accordingly and attach the free ends to the hose screw connections of the bubble counter. Make sure to connect the supply hose to the connection
with the long tube in the bubble counter. Unscrew the lid of the bubble counter. Fill it about 2/3 full with water and close it again. If the backflow stop
(check valve) was dismantled during unscrewing, make sure to reassemble all parts correctly (see drawing on the separate packaging of the bubble
counter).
Note: For installations without a bubble counter, it is necessary to install a separate backflow stop, which is not included in the set.
PROFESSIONAL:
Select a dry and easily accessible location for installation when mounting the pH control (chap. 5.8.). Connect the solenoid valve of the pressure reg-
ulator (chap. 5.2.) to the connection „valve" of the pH control (chap. 5.8.) using the valve connection cable enclosed. The sockets on the pH control
and the plug connections of the valve cable are designed in such a way that an incorrect connection is not possible.
7.4.
Moving the CO₂ pressurised gas cylinder into position
SYSTEM M:
Choose a place to mount the refillable CO₂ pressurised gas cylinder that is out of the reach of children (e.g. aquarium cabinet). Mount the JBL PRO-
FLORA CO₂ CYLINDER WALLMOUNT on a wall or furniture surface using the two enclosed screws. The thickness of the furniture boards should not
be less than 16mm. The refillable CO₂ pressurised gas cylinder CYLINDER 500 M (chap. 5.1.1) can now be hung on the wall mount using the safety
bracket.
SYSTEM U:
The CYLINDER 500 U disposable CO₂ pressurised gas cylinders (chap. 5.1.2) are free-standing.
Choose a place for mounting the CO₂ pressurised gas cylinder that is out of the reach of children (e.g. aquarium cabinet).
7.5.
Connecting the pressure regulator to the CO₂ pressurised gas cylinder
SYSTEM U:
Quickly screw the rear internal thread of the pressure regulator fitting (chap. 5.2. version 2, chap. 5.3. version 2) onto the external thread of the
disposable CO₂ pressurised gas cylinder. After a few turns a brief hissing noise will be heard. Continue to turn briskly until resistance is felt. Then turn
about half a turn more until the pressure regulator is hand-tight.
SYSTEM M:
Screw the rear connection nut of the pressure regulator (chap. 5.2. version1, chap. 5.3. version 1) onto the external thread of the cylinder valve
on the refillable CO₂ pressurised gas cylinder CYLINDER 500 M (chap. 5.1. version 1). The connecting nut is a knurled nut intended for use
WITHOUT tools! Only tighten it „hand-tight" without tools. Use of tools can lead to damage. Close the needle valve clockwise if not already closed.
Never operate a vertical or inverted CO₂ pressurised gas cylinder!! This can destroy the pressure regulator!
ADVANCED:
The left pressure gauge now shows the cylinder pressure of about 60 bar and the right pressure gauge the working pressure of about 1.5 bar.
7.6.
Attaching the CO₂ hose
Now attach the CO₂ hose to the hose screw connection of the pressure regulator (chap. 5.2. part e, chap. 5.3. part e.).
7.7.
Adjusting the pressure regulator.
Slowly open the needle valve on the pressure regulator and set a bubble rate of about 10 – 15 bubbles on the bubble counter. After a run-in period of
24h, set the bubble count for your aquarium, as described in chap. 8.3.
ADVANCED:
First plug the power supply unit of the solenoid valve into a socket carrying continuous current and connect the 12 V cable of the power supply unit
to the cable of the solenoid valve.
After the required number of bubbles have been set for your aquarium (chap. 8.3.), connect the solenoid valve to the power supply which is con-
trolled by the time switch for the aquarium lighting. This ensures the CO₂ supply is interrupted at night when the plants do not require CO₂.
PROFESSIONAL:
Put the pH control unit into operation and carry out the calibration required for the initial start-up in accordance with the operating instructions en-
closed separately. Make sure that the solenoid valve of the pressure regulator is connected to the pH control unit via the valve connection cable. Set
the control for the solenoid valve to „man open":
Settings key > select "Valve" > press OK > select "man open"> press OK.
Continue as described for BASIC. After the run-in period of 24 hours, set the control for the solenoid valve to „auto":

Settings key > select "Valve" > press OK > select "auto" > press OK.
Then set the pH set point required for your aquarium and the required number of bubbles on the pH control unit as described in the operating in-
structions enclosed separately. The pH control unit now automatically regulates the pH value and the CO₂ supply for your aquarium.
8.
How much CO₂ is needed?
8.1.
pH level, CO₂ and carbonate hardness (KH)
The three parameters, pH value, CO₂ content and carbonate hardness, are inseparably linked, as they are interdependent.
When CO₂ comes into contact with water, a certain amount of carbon dioxide is produced which reduces the pH value. The greater proportion
remains dissolved in the water in the form of gas and serves as an important nutrient for plants. CO₂, therefore, has two benefits: it reduces the level
of pH in the aquarium, which is usually too high, to a level appropriate for fish and plants whilst at the same time providing plants with their main
source of nutrients. This guarantees luxuriant plant growth and lively, healthy fish.
How much CO₂ is needed to maintain a particular pH value depends on the KH in the aquarium. The higher the KH, the more CO₂ is required. Once
the KH and pH values are known, the CO₂ content can be calculated. The following table saves you making the calculations and also shows the pH
values which you can set without any risk to your fish.
The auto pH curve shows the values that are automatically maintained by the pH control unit in the PROFESSIONAL fertiliser systems if the „auto
pH" function has been activated. We recommend activating this function to always keep the pH value within the ideal range for your fish and plants.

8.2.
The correct amount of CO₂ and the correct pH value
JBL recommends a CO₂ content of between 15 and 35 mg/l in aquarium water. This range is marked with "CO₂ correct " in the table above. 20 – 25
mg/l have proved to be ideal. This level is not harmful to fish whilst at the same time promotes luxuriant plant growth. For aquascaping we recom-
mend values up to 35 mg/l.
• Measure the KH of your aquarium water with the enclosed JBL KH test kit.
• In the section "CO₂ correct", look for the pH value which is correct for the KH and the desired CO₂ value.
• Gradually adjust the CO₂ bubble count so that this pH level is attained.
Please ensure that only those pH values are set which do not harm fish. This is the section of the table labelled "CO₂ correct".
8.3.
Setting the amount of CO₂
The amount of CO₂ which must be added for the desired pH value depends on various factors such as water movement, consumption by plants, etc.
and needs to be calculated individually for each particular aquarium.
• Begin with about 15 bubbles per minute in the JBL PROFLORA CO₂ TAIFUN GLASS per 100 l aquarium water. This corresponds to about 10
bubbles per minute using the bubble counter JBL PROFLORA CO₂ TAIFUN COUNT SAFE.
• After one day, check whether the desired pH value has been attained in the aquarium.
• Should this not be the case, increase the CO₂ supply to about 20 – 25 bubbles in the JBL PROFLORA CO₂ TAIFUN SPIRAL (approx. 14 - 16 bub-
bles in the bubble counter). If necessary, increase the supply in further small stages until the required pH level is reached.
• Check to make sure the pH level is maintained, so that the CO₂ level in the CO₂ permanent test is also correct.
