Connections and control elements
1 USB3.0 ports (2x)
2 Slot bracket (replaceable with the supplied short
slot bracket; to be mounted in flat computer case)
Installation
If you do not have the expertise to per-
form the installation, please arrange for the installation to be carried out by an
expert or a suitable specialist shop!
Switch off the computer in which the mounting frame is to be installed as well
as all connected devices and separate all devices from the mains voltage; pull
the mains plug! Just turning off at the on/off switch is not enough!
• Open your computer's housing and carefully remove the cover.
• Locate a free PCIe slot, remove the respective slot cover and insert the PCIe card into the
slot. Screw down the plug-in card firmly (unless the computer case you use provides an op-
tion of screwless installation).
To install the plug-in card in a flat computer casing, a low-profile slot bracket is
provided. Remove the long slot bracket (2) from the plug-in card and then mount the
low-profile slot plate.

• Close the computer housing.
• Connect the computer and monitor to the mains voltage again and switch on all devices.
• If your computer does not start correctly, switch it off immediately and check all the settings
and cable connections.
Before opening the PC again, disconnect the PC from the mains voltage, see above!
Driver installation
• MacOS OS (10.8.4, 10.8.5 or 10.9 and higher is required) and Windows 8 or Linux Kernel
2.6.31 and later versions detect the plug-in card automatically and install the needed driver.
It is an integral part of the operating system. In this case, the supplied CD is not needed.
• For older Windows operating systems (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7) a CD with
appropriate drivers is enclosed.
Windows detects the plug-in card automatically. Cancel the automatic search for drivers or
the hardware recognition.
Insert the supplied data carrier into the respective drive of your computer. Start the Windows
file manager.
Open the "USB3.0 Host" directory, and then the "NEC" folder contained therein.
Double click the "xxxxxx-setup.exe" file (here, "xxxxxx" is the version number of the driver,
e.g. „RENESAS-USB3-Host-driver-30230" or some other one).
Follow all instructions given by the installation wizard or Windows.
As soon as the driver is installed, it is necessary to restart before the plug-in card
can work correctly.
Tips and notes
USB2.0/1.1 devices
• It is possible, of course, to operate all "old" USB2.0/1.1 devices with a USB3.0 port. Simply
connect the USB device to one of the USB3.0 ports on the plug-in card.
Use conventional USB2.0/1.1 connection cables to connect the devices.
• Normally, USB2.0/1.1 devices do not become any faster when operated on a USB3.0 port of
the plug-in card. However, if the USB2.0 controller on the motherboard works relatively slowly
it is possible, for example, that USB2.0 hard disks can transfer data faster via a USB3.0 port
on the plug-in card.
USB3.0 devices
• In order to connect a USB3.0 device, a USB3.0 cable is necessary. At first glance, the
USB3.0-A plug looks similar to a conventional USB2.0/1.1 plug, however, it has additional
internal connector pins.
The USB-B plug on a USB3.0 cable, however, has a different shape.
• A USB3.0 hard disk enclosure can also be operated on a USB3.0/2.0/1.1 port via a conven-
tional USB2.0/1.1 cable. However, a faster data transfer is not possible..
• In order to use the fast data transfer of USB3.0, not only a USB3.0 controller is necessary but
also a USB3.0 device and an appropriate USB3.0 cable.
• USB3.0 provides a theoretical data transfer of 5GBit (approx. 600MByte/s). The transfer
speed in practice depends, however, on the devices involved in the data transfer (e.g. internal
and external hard disk), the type of data (many small files or few large files) and many other
factors.
Disposal
Electrical and electronic products do not belong in your regular household
waste.
