Bestimmungsgemäße Verwendung
Das Produkt ist zum Einbau in einen PC-kompatiblen Computer vorgesehen und
dient dort zum Anschluss an ein bestehendes Netzwerk.

Einbau
Falls Sie keine Fachkenntnisse für den Einbau besitzen, so lassen Sie
den Einbau von einer FACHKRAFT oder einer entsprechenden
Fachwerkstatt durchführen!
Durch unsachgemässen Einbau wird sowohl die Steckkarte als auch
Ihr Computer und alle angeschlossenen Geräte beschädigt.
Vorsicht, Lebensgefahr!
Schalten Sie den Computer, in den die Steckkarte eingebaut werden
soll und alle angeschlossenen Geräte aus und trennen Sie alle Geräte
von der Netzspannung, ziehen Sie den Netzstecker! Das Ausschalten
über den Ein-/Ausschalter genügt nicht!
• Schrauben Sie das Gehäuse Ihres Computers auf und nehmen Sie den
Gehäusedeckel vorsichtig ab.
• Suchen Sie einen freien PCI-Steckplatz, entfernen Sie das zugehörige Slotblech
und stecken Sie die PCI-Netzwerkkarte in den PCI-Slot ein. Schrauben Sie die
Steckkarte fest, kontrollieren Sie den korrekten Sitz im PCI-Slot!
• Schrauben Sie den Computer zu.
• Verbinden Sie Ihren Computer und Monitor mit der Netzspannung und schalten Sie
alle Geräte ein.
• Verbinden Sie die RJ45-Buchse der Netzwerkkarte über ein entsprechendes 1:1
durchverbundenes Kabel (CAT5) z.B. mit Ihrem Netzwerk-Hub.
Eine direkte Verbindung zweier Netzwerkkarten (ohne Hub) ist über ein spezielles
gekreuztes Netzwerkkabel möglich.
• Startet Ihr Computer nicht korrekt, so schalten Sie ihn sofort aus und kontrollieren
Sie sämtliche Einstellungen und Kabelverbindungen.
Vor dem erneuten Öffnen des PCs ist der PC von der Netzspannung zu
trennen, siehe oben!
Treiber-Installation
Windows erkennt die PCI-Netzwerkkarte automatisch. Legen Sie die Treiberdiskette
in das Diskettenlaufwerk Ihres PCs ein und folgen Sie allen Anweisungen von
Windows.
Windows 9x/ME benötigt dann ggf. seine Installations-CD, um weitere
Netzwerkkomponenten zu installieren.
Tipps & Hinweise
• Wenn Sie für Ihr Netzwerk einen eigenen Netzwerk- oder Systemadministrator
haben (etwa in einer größeren Firma), so lassen Sie IHN Anschluss und
Verkabelung übernehmen, bauen Sie die Netzwerkkarte nicht selbst ein und ver-
binden Sie die Netzwerkkarte nicht mit dem Netzwerk.
• Die angegebene Datenübertragungsrate von 10 bzw. 100MBit pro Sekunde wird
normalerweise nicht erreicht. Übertragungsfehler, gleichzeitige Zugriffe mehrerer
Computer, Zugriffe auf die Festplatte (Lesen auf dem einen Rechner, Schreiben
auf dem anderen) usw. verringern diesen theoretischen Wert. Praktisch sind

effektive Datenübertragungsraten bei 100MBit bis etwa einige MByte/s erreich-

bar, bei 10MBit bis 800kByte/s.
• Bei Windows95/98 kann es etwas dauern, bis die Rechner im Netzwerk sichtbar
werden. Wenn Sie die Rechner eingeschaltet haben und Windows95/98 auf allen
Rechnern nach ein paar Sekunden geladen ist, können Sie in der Regel nicht sofort
einen anderen Rechner zugreifen. Beim Doppelklick auf "Netzwerkumgebung"
kann z.B. die Meldung kommen "...Das Netzwerk kann nicht durchsucht wer-
den...". Es kann unter bestimmten Umständen bis zu zwei Minuten dauern, bis
weitere Rechner erscheinen.
Um Laufwerke und Verzeichnisse für andere Rechner freizugeben, muss die
"Datei- und Druckerfreigabe" aktiviert sein. Sie finden Sie z.B. in der
Systemsteuerung unter "Netzwerk". Wie die Option schon sagt, können Sie auch
Ihren Drucker für die anderen Rechner auf dem Netzwerk freigeben, d.h. Sie brau-
chen nicht mehr an jedem PC einen Drucker anschliessen oder gar die Dateien per
Diskette zwischen den Rechnern umkopieren, um sie ausdrucken zu können.
• Bei Windows 98 wird das IPX-Netzwerkprotokoll nicht installiert. Ältere Spiele, die
ein IPX-Protokoll benötigen, laufen also nicht!
Sie müssen erst von Hand in der Systemsteuerung/Netzwerk "Hinzufügen"
anklicken, dann "Protokoll" und beim "Hersteller: Microsoft" das "IPX-Netzwerk"
auswählen und installieren.
• Wenn der Rechnerstart bei Windows 98 nun auf einmal viel länger dauert, so liegt
das daran, dass Windows 98 standardmäßig das "TCP/IP"-Protokoll installiert.
Dabei ist als Grundeinstellung die Option eingestellt "IP-Adresse automatisch
beziehen". Sie finden diese unter "Systemsteuerung"/"Netzwerk" und dann im
Fenster "Die folgenden Netzwerkkomponenten sind installiert:". Wählen Sie hier
"TCP/IP-> xxxx" (xxxx steht für den Namen der Netzwerkkarte). Nach einem
Mausklick auf "Eigenschaften" erscheint die o.g. Option.
Klicken Sie auf "IP-Adresse festlegen" und geben Sie z.B. eine fiktive IP-Adresse
ein, z.B. 192.168.1.1, den zweiten PC stellen Sie auf 192.168.1.2 ein, den dritten
auf 192.168.1.3 usw.
Die ersten drei Zahlen (das "192.168.1") sind auf allen PCs gleich zu wählen.
Im Eingabefeld "Subnet-Mask" (unter dem Eingabefeld für die IP-Adresse) geben
Sie bei allen PCs 255.255.255.0 ein.
• Trennen Sie die RJ45-Kabelverbindung sicherheitshalber nur bei ausgeschalte-
tem PC. Durch geöffnete Dateien (wenn z.B. ein anderer PC auf Ihren PC zugreift)
könnte es sonst zu Datenverlust kommen.

Installation
If you do not have any specialist knowledge of installation proce-
dures, please arrange for the installation to be carried out by SUIT-
ABLY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL or a suitable specialist shop!
Incorrect installation will damage the plug-in card, your computer
and all connected devices.
Danger of fatal injury!
Switch off the computer in which the plug-in card is to be installed
and all the connected devices. Isolate all devices from the mains volt-
age by disconnecting the power plug! Switching the devices off at the
on/off switch is not enough!
• Unscrew the housing of your computer and remove it cautiously.
• Locate a free PCI slot, remove the associated slot plate and install the PCI network
adapter in the PCI slot. Tighten the plug-in card with screws and verify that it is
correctly seated in the PCI slot!
•Retighten the screws on the computer housing.
• Reconnect your computer and monitor to the mains voltage and switch on all the
devices.
• Using a 1:1 through-connected cable (CAT 5), connect the RJ45 jack of the net-
work adapter e.g. to your network hub.
Two network adapters can be directly connected (without an interposed hub) using
a special crossed network cable.
• If your computer does not start correctly, switch it off immediately and check all
the settings and cable connections.
Before opening the PC, the PC must always be disconnected from the
voltage source. See instructions above!
Installing Drivers
Windows recognises the PC network adapter automatically. Insert the driver diskette
in the diskette drive of your PC and follow all the instructions issued by Windows.
Windows 9x/ME may require its installation CD to install other network components.
Tips and Hints
• If your network is assigned a network or system administrator (as will probably be
the case in a larger company) please ask this person to install, connect and wire
the network adapter. Do not install and connect the network adapter yourself!
• Typically, the specified nominal data transfer rate of 10 / 100 Mbit per second will
not be achieved. Transfer errors, simultaneous accesses by multiple computers,
hard drive accesses (read access on one computer, write access on another), etc.
reduce this theoretical value. In practice, the following effective data transfer rates

can be achieved: some MB at 100 Mbit, 800 KB at 10 Mbit.

• In the case of Windows95/98 it may take a while until the computers are visible in
the network. When you switch on the computers and Windows95/98 has been
loaded on all the computers after a few seconds, you can rarely access other com-
puters immediately. When double-clicking "Network Neighborhood", e.g. the fol-
lowing message may be displayed "...The network is not accessible...". It may
take up to two minutes until further computers are displayed.
To share drives and directories with other computers, "File and Print Sharing"
must be enabled. You will find this option in the Control Panel under "Network".
As the name of the option suggests, you can also share your printer with the oth-
er computers on the network, i.e. you no longer need to connect a printer to every
PC or copy files between computers by diskette to be able to print them.
• The IPX network protocol is not installed under Windows 98. This means, old
games that require the IPX protocol cannot be executed!
In this case, proceed as follows: click "Add" under "Network" in the "Control
Panel". Then click "Protocol" and select the "IPX/SPX-compatible protocol" in the
"Manufacturers: Microsoft" list field and install it.
• If the computer now takes much longer to load Windows 98, then Windows 98
installs the "TCP/IP" protocol by default.
In this case, the "Obtain an IP address automatically" option is the default setting.
This option can be found in the window "The following network components are
installed" under "Network" in the "Control Panel". In this window, select "TCP/IP-
> xxxx" (xxxx must be replaced with the name of the network adapter). Click
"Properties" to display the above option.
Click "Specify an IP address" and enter a fictitious address, e.g. 192.168.0.1.
Enter 192.168.1.2 for the second PC, 192.168.1.3 for the third PC etc.
The first three numbers ("192.168.1" in our example) must be the same for all the
PCs.
In the "Subnet Mask" field (below the input field for the IP address), enter
255.255.255.0 for each PC.
• Disconnect the RJ45 cable connection. For safety reasons, switch off the PC first.
Otherwise, data may be lost if files are still open (e.g. while another PC is access-
ing your PC).
