5. BASE BLOCKS
The base block (concrete paving slab) must be
laid under each side support of the wall along
the length of the straight sides of the pool. It is
necessary to use base blocks as large as possi-
ble, e.g. 50x50x5 cm or 60x40x5 cm.
a. The base blocks under the side supports of
the wall must be placed so that the distance
between the centre of the block and the pool
wall is approx. 90 cm.
b. According to the dimensional sketch of the
respective pool (see page 6), mark on the
ground the spots for placing the blocks and
make excavations. Compact the bottom of
the excavation. Use a thin layer of sand or
finely ground gravel as a backfill.
c. All base blocks must be sunk into the ground
so that their upper surfaces are level with the
plane of the compacted pool subsoil.
d. Use a spirit level to check that the base blocks are perfectly horizontal and level
with the ground (Fig. 2A-12). Use a spirit level placed on a 5x10 cm prism to check
that the upper surfaces of the adjacent base blocks are in one plane. After all
blocks have been settled, create a pack around them with sand or ground gravel
(Fig. 2A-13). Compact the pack.
e. To increase the firmness of the base, the base blocks can be placed under the
side supports in a concrete laying layer. The excavation must then be about 2
times deeper than the thickness of the paving block used and on each side about
5 cm wider than the block. Use the concrete for the laying layer and the pack.
Important Note: Align the base blocks with one another as described in step b. be-
fore the concrete hardens. Wait until the concrete has hardened sufficiently before
continuing to build the pool.
f. Remove all survey stakes. Leave the other stakes in place for now, to check the
dimensions during construction.
WARNING: Make sure that the area around the pool is sufficiently drained to
prevent the substrate from being washed away.
