VC MANUAL
a. AUDIO PERFORMANCE
The general consensus is that power amps should be
neutral in nature, i.e. they should not influence the tonal
characteristics of incoming signals, but simply amplify
these signals to the desired levels. In reality, however, tonal
coloration varies considerably from amp to amp. Only very
few of the power amps currently in use deliver a
satisfactory response.
Often the factor responsible for poor sound is not the
speaker system but the power amps. Our objective was to
put an end to this problem by designing an amp featuring
an absolutely neutral tonal response.
The VC power amps meet the following specifications:
- transparent resolution in all frequency bands,
- ample headroom even in the peak-power range,
- uncomprisingly accurate response at transient peaks, and
- linear frequency response.
b. APPLICATIONS
The HK-AUDIO VC models were designed for high-
performance applications. These amps deliver abundant
power to achieve maximum sound pressure for large PA
systems and they are built to withstand the rigors of the
road. Furthermore, they offer loads of headroom at very
low distortion levels. This guarantees the kind of
transparent, dynamic response required by today´s digital
signal sources.
c. RELIABILITY
Every VC power amp is inspected by a live sound
technician and checked via computer-controlled
monitoring systems several times during production. They
also undergo a final temperature-controlled burn-in period.
The VC power amps are subjected to the same exacting
quality standards that we apply to all HK AUDIO products,
for we feel you should be free to focus on your
performance rather than concern yourself with your
equipment.
d. DESIGN
The HK AUDIO VC models are a major innovation in the
field of analog power amplification. They are equipped
with MOS-FETs exactly where they are most effective - in
the driver stage, where their fail-safe attributes protect the
amp from secondary breakdowns. The VC amps' circuit-
design uses four AC supply voltages. This type of design
substantially reduces internal power loss. The VC models'
power output is dictated solely by the input signal's
impulses. The output signal is free of the power spikes that
often occur with combinational circuits. Thanks to the
advanced architecture of the circuitry, alinear readings
apparent during distortion analyses are dramatically lower
4
than those produced by crosstalk distortion in power amps
operating in A/B modes. The advantages of this progressive
circuitry are apparent in the outstanding technical
specifications the HK AUDIO VC power amps deliver.
e. ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Your VC power amp is capable of delivering its rated
power continuously. Energy management is not random, as
the VC amps are equipped with an energy management
circuit that monitors actual AC power consumption. If a
greater-than-average amount of current is consumed for a
lengthy period of time, the VC power amps automatically
reduce their power output and subsequently the amount of
electrical power they require. The requisite reduction of
power uptake is actually a very small increment. For
instance, in extreme conditions, the VC 2400 reduces its
power output by 3 dB, while reducing power consumption
below 12 ampere. During operational tests based on
continuous, compressed musical performance with a
speaker load of 2 ohms per channel, the VC 2400 had an
average power consumption of less than 10 ampere,
whereby the energy management circuit was never
activated. Under similar conditions, many other power
amps draw substantially more power.
