Operating Your Stationary Steam Engine

1. Always pay attention to the steam pressure and the water supply during
the whole time that you are operating the stationary steam engine.
Running a steam engine without water will lead to damages in a very
short time.
2. Never manually manipulate the safety valve (by manually holding it in
place or changing its setting with a weight).
3. Open the steam valve.
Set the air bleed valve to
"boiler feed". Move the
flywheel to start the
drive mechanism.
Pay attention to the
direction of rotation
when doing this!
4. When refilling the water during ope-
ration, set the evacuation valve so
that the by the pump pumps the
required liquid directly into the boiler.
The pump is designed so that the
boiler cannot be overfilled. Despite
this you must constantly check the
water level indicator! Without the
preparations for refilling the water,
the pump will constantly run. Make
sure that in this situation too the air
bleed valve is set for "boiler feed".
Tip: Regardless of whether you are
operating the steam engine with or
without refilling it with water, the
hose should be installed on the pump and a container should be ready
nearby so that any water seeping out of the boiler at the start of the
firing up phase can be collected in the container.
5. If the steam pressure should fall too much, the drive mechanism will
come to a stop. In this situation close the steam valve and wait until
enough steam pressure has built up again.
6. The whistle can be activated by turning the
signal valve. It requires a minimum pressure
of 1 bar or 14 pounds per square inch.
7. The safety valve will kick in at a steam pressure of 2.2 bars or
31.9 pounds per square inch. Caution: Do not injure yourself on the
escaping steam! Ways to reduce the steam pressure:
1. Turn on the steam drive mechanism.
2. Blow the steam whistle.
3. Removing the burner from the com-
bustion chamber / extinguishing
flames. This can be done with help
of the cover that comes with the live
steam engine. This step should only
be taken if steps 1 and 2 are not
successful. Tip: Use a pair of flat
nose pliers as an "extension" if you
are going to use the cover to put
out the flames in the combustion
chamber.
8. Caution, danger of injury! When the stationary steam engine is in opera-
tion, it is possible for hot water or steam to escape from all of the valves.
9. The operating period for this stationary steam engine is about
15 – 20 minutes. Never fill the oil cups with super heated steam oil,
when the steam engine is in operation (=> Page 9 Point 8).
