b. General
• The smoke alarm requires a constant power of 230V. Moreover, the smoke alarm has to be provided with a well-functioning 9V backup battery.
• The correct mains supply is indicated by a constantly lit green LED.
• Weekly test the smoke alarms by pressing the test button and keeping it pressed. The corresponding smoke alarm and all connected alarms have to be
activated.
• Smoke alarms only function well if they are installed at the right place and maintained well in accordance with what is mentioned in the Niko user manual.
• Keep the smoke alarm out of the reach of children!
c. Advice during building or renovating activities
• Protect the smoke detector against dust.
• Note: when covering the smoke detector, it loses its functionality.
7. GUIDE LINES
Safety measures
- Use the test button of the smoke alarm to test the operation and to get everyone acquinted with the sound of the smoke alarm.
- Draw a floor plan with at least two escape routes for every inhabitant.
- Discuss the escape plan and make sure every inhabitant knows what he/she has to do in case of fire.
- Regularly practice the escape route with the inhabitants.
- Agree on an assembly place in case of fire.
- Besides the required smoke alarms, also provide fire extinguishers, fire blankets...
What to do in case of fire
If one or more smoke alarms are activated without someone has pressed the test button, you have a possible emergency situation.
1) Do not panic. Keep calm and think clearly, so you and the other inhabitants can leave the building as soon as possible.
2) Check room doors for heat and/or smoke. A hot door is an indication of a fire at the other side of the door. Never open a hot door. Use an alternative escape
route.
3) Close the doors behind you in order to prevent the fire from increasing.
4) In case there is a lot of smoke: keep close to the ground and crawl to the exit. Take brief breaths and if possible, breathe through a damp cloth.
5) Leave the building as soon as possible. Never stop to take along any possessions.
6) Go to the assembly place and check whether everyone is present.
7) Call the fire brigade.
8) Only enter the building if a fireman says the situation is safe again. If you wish some more information, please contact your local fire brigade.
8. THE RESTRICTIONS OF SMOKE ALARMS
Warning: Smoke alarms are appliances that can give an early warning for a possible fire. Fires can originate in different ways and are always unpredictable.
In some cases, a smoke alarm is not effective enough:
- The smoke alarm does not function if there is no power on the mains or the battery is down. Replace the battery on time.
- Smoke alarms do not react if they detect an insufficient amount of smoke. It is possible that fires that originate in chimneys, in walls, on roofs or behind
closed doors or on another floor are not detected on time by the smoke alarm. This can also be the case if the air currents carry the smoke away from the
smoke alarm. If the smoke alarm is installed outside the bedroom or on another floor, it is possible that a sound sleeper does not hear the alarm. For a good
positioning: see 3.1.
- It is possible that the smoke alarm is not heard by people that have drunk alcohol or taken drugs.
- Accumulation of dust and dirt can decrease the life span of the smoke alarm. Also see '6. Usage warnings + product maintenance'. By way of precaution,
we strongly advize you to replace the smoke alarm after 10 years.
