c. Ground floor
In a house with only a ground floor, install the smoke alarm in the corridor or along the escape route. Install the alarms as close as possible to the living room.
Make sure the smoke alarm is audible in all bedrooms. If the corridor is over 15m long, one smoke alarm is not sufficient. In this case, install a smoke alarm
every 7,5m.
d. Check
Check whether the alarm is audible everywhere. Check whether the alarm is audible in all bedrooms with closed doors and with the radio tuned in at the usual
conversation volume. If the alarm is not clearly audible, install a connected smoke alarm near (or in) the bedroom.
e. Never place a smoke alarm:
- in bathrooms, showers, garages, kitchens or other places where the smoke alarm can generate a false alarm due to steam, condensations, normal smoke
or gases. Install the smoke alarm at a distance of min. 6m from these kind of smoke sources.
- in places where the temperature can drop below 0°C or rise above 40°C.
- in the immediate vicinity of doors, electricity boxes, windows, light fittings... as these can obstruct the smoke detection.
- on surfaces that are strikingly warmer or colder than the rest of the room (e.g. non-isolated exterior walls).
