Health and safety
WARNING: wait 5 min. after isolating supply before handling.
For a safe use of LVCS capacitor units, please ensure:
1. Installation and maintenance are undertaken only by authorised
and qualified personnel, in accordance with current local
regulations;
2. Isolate the equipment from the supply before attempting to gain
access.
Inspection on reception
Unpack the LVCS and check that:
-
data on the label correspond to those of your purchase order
and local regulations;
-
the LVCS is not damaged.
Any loss or damage should be notified immediately to your closest
ABB agent.
Storage
Indoor, in dry, dust free and non-corrosive environments, protected
from vibrations or shocks.
Storage temp.: T° min.: -40°C/-40°F
Transportation & Handling
In case severe conditions of transportation are expected, we
recommend that the panel including LVCS units be positioned in
such a way that LVCS units are in vertical position (Fig. #1).

INSTALLATION

Applicable standards
IEC 60831 Parts 1 and 2. UL 810. C 22.2 N°190. Current local
regulations.
Protection
The LVCS is an IP20 protected capacitor unit.
Location
Indoor installation on firm foundation or fixed on a rigid plate/frame
in well-ventilated situations where the ambient temperature does
not exceed 35°C/95°F over one year and 45°C/113°F over 24 hours
(according to IEC 60831 Parts 1 and 2 for a -25/D category
product).
The LVCS must be fixed in such a way to ensure a natural airflow
between 2 units, from bottom to top. Horizontal fixation is forbidden
(Fig. #2).
Harmonics
Installation of capacitors on networks disturbed by harmonics may
require special precautions especially when there is a risk of
resonance phenomena.
LVCS group assembly
To make a group of several LVCS capacitor units (up to 3
maximum):
1. Place the LVCS capacitor units on a plane and firm surface, side
by side. Please note that the lengthwise sides of the LVCS have
different shapes. One is provided with an outward-directed slot,
the other one with an inward-directed slot. When assembling,
make sure that 2 different sides are facing each other (Fig. #3).
2. Position the outward-directed slot side of one unit above the
inward-directed slot side of another unit. Align them together.
Then slide down the upper unit (Fig. #4, #5). If any resistance,
check the position of each slots and their alignment.
3. Insert interconnection bars (optional) into the openings at the
top of the LVCS units (Fig. #6). Push on both bar ends one after
the other using a flat tip screwdriver until the bar is blocked (Fig.
#7, #8).
LVCS fixation
Fix each LVCS unit through its 2 fixation holes by means of M6-
screws (not included) (Fig. #9).
For proper ventilation separate the max. rated LVCS group by 2 cm
from each other.
Make sure that the rigidity of the support and the screws are
T° max.: 75°C/167°F
2
sufficient to bear the weight of the LVCS capacitor unit(s).
Electrical connection
Cables should be rated at minimum 1.5 times the nominal capacitor
current.
The cable size should not exceed 35 mm². Cable lugs are
recommended.
Before inserting the wires inside the LVCS terminals, make sure the
terminal screws are completely loosened (screwdriver tip: we
recommend the PH2 special for electricians. A 6 mm plate one is
also suitable) (Fig. #10, #11).
Ensure that all connections are tight. Torque must be 4Nm.
COMMISSIONING
With the equipment isolated from the supply, check:
-
Cabling is properly connected;
-
Ambient ventilation is adequate (WARNING: horizontal fixation
of LVCS units is forbidden);
-
Correct tightness of the connections.
ACCESSORIES (OPTIONAL)
Interconnection bars
The interconnection bars allow making one group of LVCS
capacitor units connected in parallel. One kit of three bars is needed
for a group of two LVCS capacitor units.
Please revert to charts on page 15 for max rating (kvar) of LVCS
group assembly.
For installation revert to LVCS group assembly paragraph.

MAINTENANCE

1. Ensure safety procedures are completed (see Health & Safety);
2. Annual maintenance should include:
-
Remove dust deposits, clean all parts;
-
Check tightness of all electrical connections;
-
Check ambient temperature.
To ungroup several LVCS units, remove the bars by levering them
up alternatively on both ends by means of a 5 mm plate tip
screwdriver (Fig. #12).
