Important notice : Specifi c training is essential before
use
Read this notice carefully before use. This technical notice illus-
trates ways of using this product. Only some types of misuse
and forbidden uses currently known are represented (shown in
the crossed out diagrams). Many other types of misuse exist,
and it is impossible to enumerate, or even imagine all of them.
Only the techniques shown in the diagrams and not crossed out
are authorised. All other uses are excluded : danger of death. In
case of doubt or problem of understanding, contact PETZL.
Activities at height, climbing, via ferrata, caving, canyoning, rap-
pelling, ski-touring, exploration and rescue are dangerous activi-
ties which may lead to severe injury or even death. Gaining an
adequate apprenticeship in appropriate techniques and methods
of safety is your own responsibility.
You personally assume all risks and responsibilities for all
damage, injury or death which may occur during or following
use of our products in any manner whatsoever. If you are not
able, or not in a position to assume this responsibility or to take
this risk, do not use this equipment.
Helmet
You should know
Caving carries serious risk for the head. Wearing a helmet redu-
ces this risk substantially, and one should of course be worn.
Beyond the standard requirements, given blows of extreme
violence, the helmet plays its ultimate role by absorbing the
maximum amount of energy possible by deforming somtimes
to the breaking-point.
Norm
This product conforms to the requirements of standards EN
climbing helmet and UIAA.
Fitting
For a good fi t, begin by fi tting to head size by using the adjust-
ment on the right, adjust the nape strap by means of the
adjuster on the left. The chin strap is provided with a quick
adjust buckle which may be adjusted on or off the head.
Electric lamp
Use
- The switch may be locked for transporting or storage by
pressing
the red button (1 - A). To unlock, press on the other end of
the red
bar (1 - B).
- Switch in upper position : powerful halogen light, but heavy
energy demand (2).
- Switch in lower position : short distance light using minimum
energy (3).
- The zoom button allows focussing the halogen light to suit
the need. In the low position the beam is narrow. In the high
position it is
broad (4).
Changing the batteries
Open the rear box by releasing the 2 clips (5). Fit 4 size AA
alkaline batteries. Normal batteries have a very short shelf life,
and in some cases insuffi cient power to run halogen bulbs.
Attention : ensure that batteries are inserted with the correct
polarity. Use in the "wrong" direction could cause shorting,
resulting in gassing which could cause an explosion.
Attention : never dismantle the gasket ring inside the
cover. Take care to keep it in place (clean with water and
a cotton bud). Lubricate the ring with a silicone based grease.
If changing batteries in a damp environment, dry the inside of
the box after use.
Lengthy storage : remove batteries and leave box open.
Changing a bulb
Remove the acetylene part. Open the headpiece by twisting the
bezel counter-clockwise (7). Remove it completely. Should it be
jammed, try a penetrating fl uid, or warm the front cover with
a hair drier.
Halogen bulb : unscrew the burned out bulb and screw in the
new one tightening securely.
Mini-bulb : pull forwards, check that the fi xings are not twisted
before inserting the replacement bulb. Check that the new bulb
works before replacing the bezel. Replacement bulbs : do not
clip old bulbs into the replacement bulb holder (risk of confu-
sion later).
Darkening bulb = loss of brightness before fi nal failure of bulb.
To close the headpiece :
- position the refl ector unit correctly over the headpiece (8),
- screw the bezel of the refl ector unit with the right hand to the
position where the mark on the bezel is situated between the
two indicator marks on the headpiece (9 & 10).
If the bulb change must be done in bad conditions (wet,
mud, dust...) open up after use, clean the gasket well,
4
dry the headpiece and lubricate the gasket with a silicone based
grease.
Notes
If the lamp is accidentally left on in a rucsac, the heat generated
by the halogen bulb may damage the refl ector (take care to lock
the switch). Simultaneous use of both bulbs is not possible : this
would only increase power drain without giving extra light. Light
duration with the halogen bulb is greater if it is used repeatedly
for shorter periods than if left switched on. For example one hour
of continuous use = 15 to
20 times 5 minutes use, dependent on the quality of the alkaline
batteries used. In very cold conditions, or if the batteries are
run down, the mini-bulb may give more light than the halogen
bulb.
Use in high mountains : moisture naturally contained in the lamp
may condense on the glass in the cold : open and dry.
The DUO is ideal for wet caves, canyoning, kayaking, and any
wet weather sports or rescue situation, but don't misunderstand
this is not a diving light. If either of the two compartments takes
in water (perished or dirty gasket, poor fi tting), open both boxes,
take out batteries and bulbs, rinse in clean water, then dry very
slowly.
Should the lamp not work
- check the batteries,
- check that the bulb is not blown, or that the connections are not
oxidised. Move the small bulb in and out of place several times,
with the switch in the "bulb on" position,
- check the absence of corrosion on the battery contacts in the
rear box (clean them if necessary),
- work the switch several times,
- if your lamp still does not work, call your service center.
Acetylene lamp
Be careful not to get burned by the fl ame or the highly infl amable
acetylene.
Fix the tube coming from your acetylene generator (ARIANE E50
or other model) onto the jet pipe, and into the clip at the back
of the helmet (11).
Avoid pulling the gas tube off frequently : risk of leakage or poor
connection. For more security glue it in place.
After starting up your acetylene generator, light the fl ame by
turning the red button to activate the piezo spark (12).
You can choose between two acetylene jet models :
21 litres : (mounted as new) for a good light in big passages,
6-8 hours continuous light with an ARIANE E50 generator.
14 litres : (supplied as the replacement jet) (marked 14) to
economise on carbide. 9-12 hours duration of one fi ll with the
ARIANE E50.
To take the jet out : unscrew the red bezel. Chek that there is a
gasket in good condition in place before re-fi xing (13).
The jet produces a fi shtail fl ame. So to obtain optimum light,
orient the jet so that the fl ame is in the same plane as the
refl ector (14).
The jet cleaning wire allows rapid cleaning of the jet. The end of
this cleaning wire tucks in between the helmet and the spring.
For a thorough clean, remove the jet and leave to soak in weak
acid, or a descaling agent (15).
The acetylene lamp can be rapidly detached from the helmet
: tilt it to the rear. Then lift it upwards, then detach the gas
pipe from the rear helmet clip. This will be found particularly
useful for storage, as well as for passing squeezes, night walks,
prospection ...(16).
Topography
Neither helmet nor electric lamp have any magnetic components
which could affect a compass. The acetylene lamp has a mini-
mum of magnetic parts. Normally, once the helmet is on one's
head it will not affect a compass. Take care however to stow the
jet cleaner properly.
Modifi cations
Any modifi cations may impair the effectiveness of the product
and reduce the protection it provides (strength, electrical insula-
tion etc...). It is inadvisable to apply stickers or paint to the
outside of the product as their chemical components could in the
long term affect the physical properties of the product.
Safety = verifi cation
Check the condition of this product, internally and externally
before each use. Do not hesitate to scrap a product showing
signs of weakness. After a heavy blow, it is essential to replace
this product since its energy absorption capacity will be reduced.
Cleaning, maintenance, storage
Store in a dark room and away from all extreme temperatures.
To clean, check that the lamp is securely closed. Wash in clean
water. Do not use a sponge, or abrasive cleaners, especially on
the glass.
Use soap or a powder for delicate fabrics to wash the helmet
webbing. Do not wash with a high pressure hose. Do not
allow contact with corrosive or aggressive substances. Leave
the acetylene lamp to dry with the jet assembly higher than
the generator so that water drains out of the connecting tube.
E70500 020497
Check that the jet assembly is not blocked or sooted up. If the
piezo becomes too stiff, oil or gease the axis of the hammer part.
In case of accidental overheating of the aluminum refl ector, its
plastic support may melt, so protect the helmet.
