5.2 Testing
5.2.1 No-trip test (X1/2)
The no-trip test is designed to ensure that the circuit breaker
is operating within its specifications and will not trip at low or
nuisance current levels.
a. Set the test function switch to X1/2 position and the RCD
rated tripping current switch to the rated trip current of the
RCD under test.
b. Set the 'RCD Test' switch to the 0° position.
c. Press the test button. Half the rated tripping current
selected will pass through the breaker. The breaker should
not trip if it is functioning correctly. While the test is in
progress, the meter will display 'ms'.
d. Release the test button; the result will be displayed for 3s
before reverting to zero. If the button is held down, the
result will be displayed until the button is released.
If the breaker trips, the display will show the trip time. The
display will remain visible for approx. 10s.
e. Set the 'RCD Test' switch to the 180° position and repeat
the test at c. above. If the breaker trips, it is likely the RCD
is faulty. Carry out further investigations to verify the cause
before replacing the RCD.
5.2.2 Trip test (X1)
a. Set the test function switch to the X1 position and the RCD
rated tripping current switch to the rated trip current of the
RCD under test.
b. Set the 'RCD Test' switch to the 0° position.
c. Press the test button. The RCD should trip and the trip time
in mS will appear on the display. When the breaker trips,
the display will remain visible for approx 10s. To hold the
reading, press and hold down the test button. Note the
reading.
d. Reset the RCD.
e. Set the 'RCD test' switch to the 180° position.
f. Repeat the test at c. above. Note the reading.
The readings obtained in 5.2.2 c. and 5.2.2 f. should both be
within the trip time specified by the manufacturer of the RCD at
its rated tripping current.
If the breaker does not trip, or the trip time is outside the
limits specified, it is likely the RCD is faulty. Carry out further
investigations to verify the cause before replacing the RCD.
5.2.3 Fast trip test (X5)
This test is required for an RCD which has been installed to
reduce the risk associated from direct contact with a circuit
protected by an RCD rated up to 30 mA trip current.
