Protection class 2 (double or reinforced insulation, protective insulation)
Measurement category I (overvoltage category) for measurements on
electrical and electronic devices that are not directly connected to the mains
CAT I
(e.g. battery-operated devices, protective extra-low voltage, signal and
control voltages etc.).
Measurement category II (overvoltage category) for measurements on
electrical and electronic devices that are directly connected to the mains
CAT II
voltage via a mains plug. This category also includes all lower categories
(e.g. CAT I for measuring signal and control voltages).
Measurement category III (overvoltage category) for measurements in building
installations (e.g. power outlets and sub-distribution units). This category also
CAT III
includes all lower categories (e.g. CAT II for measuring electrical devices).
Measuring in CAT III is only permitted with test prods with a maximum free
contact length of 4 mm or with cover caps over the test prods.
Measurement category IV (overvoltage category) for measurements at the
source of a low-voltage installation (e.g. main distribution board, house
delivery point of energy provider etc.) and outdoors (e.g. working on
CAT IV
underground cables or overhead lines etc.). This category also includes all
smaller categories. Measuring in CAT IV is only permitted with test prods with
a maximum free contact length of 4 mm or with cover caps over the test prods.
