LVD Hard-Disk Drive Installation
This document explains how to install the terminated low-voltage differential (LVD)
small computer system interface (SCSI) cables and LVD hard-disk drives into a
computer system that contains Ultra/Wide SCSI devices. The term LVD encompasses
the same technology for Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 (U160) hard-disk drives.
NOTE: Single-ended devices on the SCSI bus, such as Ultra/Wide devices, cause the
SCSI bus to run at the slower Ultra SCSI speeds instead of the faster LVD SCSI
speeds.
If you are adding LVD hard-disk drives, replacing Ultra/Wide hard-disk drives with LVD
hard-disk drives, or both, perform the appropriate steps for your system as follows.
NOTE: Be sure to read all of the installation instructions before you begin the
procedures.
If your system already has only LVD hard-disk drives and terminated LVD cables
installed, you do not need to perform the steps in this document.
If your system does not have a redundant array of independent disks (RAID)
controller or an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller installed, perform the steps in
"Replacing the SCSI Cable in a System Without a RAID Controller or an
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI Controller" in the next section.
If your system does have a RAID controller or an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI
controller installed, perform the steps in "Replacing the SCSI Cable in a
System With a RAID Controller or an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI Controller"
later in this document.
