The apparatus can be used only in combination with the hoods and filters listed in the attached Declaration of Conformity.
2. SCOPE OF APPLICATION AND CONDITIONS FOR USE
The COMPACT AIR powered respirator is used to remove resistance to inhalation during respiration – such as is usually encountered
with filters - by producing an uninterrupted air flow. The COMPACT AIR units are designed with the following manufacturer's minimum
design flow rates (the flow rate at which the equipment will meet the class requirements in EN 12941):
•
Compact Air ref. A150102 and Compact Air ref. A150140
•
Compact Air ref. A150103
The actual flow rate may be higher than the minimum advised. It is variable based on the filters and hoods used with the Compact Air
(see attached Declaration of Conformity)
3. DESCRIPTION
A complete COMPACT AIR Powered Air Purifying Respirator apparatus consists of a:
•
Blower unit, with 3 threaded sockets for filter canisters as per EN 148-1, supplied with a belt, a flow meter, a hose with a bayonet
connector for hoods and helmets or a hose with a standard Rd40 connector for full face masks or half masks.
•
Rechargeable battery with built-in poly switch. In case of a short circuit the poly switch automatically interrupts the power supply
and therefore prevents the battery from being damaged. After repairing the short circuit, the poly switch will automatically
reconnect the battery to the power supply for recharging. The poly switch is embedded into the battery circuitry and cannot be
replaced.
•
Universal battery charger, fully automatic.
•
A flow meter indicating the minimum limit of 150 L/min (for checking the flow rate after charging the battery).
•
The complete set is supplied in a plastic carrying case with foam lining.
4. USE
The COMPACT AIR blower unit supplies an overcapacity of clean and filtered ambient air fed to a facepiece, and allows the user to
breathe in air without himself having to overcome the resistance of the filters. Given that an adult requires some 50 litres of air per
minute, the overcapacity ensures a slight overpressure and thus a high degree of protection. The working duration of the
COMPACT AIR, with a fully charged battery, depends on the actual filters used and is indicated in the attached Declaration of
Conformity.
This device does not contain a warning device to warn the user, during use, of a reduced air supply or low battery. This must be taken
into account when selecting a protective device for the actual conditions in the workplace.
4.1. Prior to use
Before using the COMPACT AIR powered respirator the user must ensure that all the conditions for safe use have been satisfied.
•
Check that the hose O-ring is fitted to the hose.
•
Check before use that the battery is sufficiently charged (see chapter 4.2 'The universal charger') and that the free flow of air is
not obstructed by blocked filters or other causes.
•
Check that the plug connection is secured by checking the locking ring is secure.
•
Check that the correct types of filter canisters have been fitted (see attached Declaration of Conformity).
•
Ensure that the filter canisters are correctly screwed into the threaded sockets of the blower unit and that the seals have been
fitted.
•
Check that the COMPACT AIR is working properly using the flow meter supplied. This is done by inserting the flow meter in a
vertical position into the end of the hose and switching on the apparatus complete with the filters to be used already fitted. The
ball in the flow meter must reach at least the minimum level (150 litres per minute).
•
Refer to the attached Declaration of Conformity for the permitted combinations.
•
Check that the apparatus is correctly adjusted at the belt to ensure it is stable during use.
4.1.1. Usage limitations system
•
The space in which the COMPACT AIR is to be used must contain at least 17% oxygen and must not contain any explosive gases
or vapours. In enclosed spaces where there is a risk of oxygen deficiency, use of the COMPACT AIR should be avoided.
•
Upon extreme physical effort, a temporary negative pressure may occur in the facepiece, resulting in a reduced protection factor
of the system.
•
Air speeds in excess of 2 m/s can affect the protection factor.
•
The ambient temperature during use should be between -10° C and +50° C.
Warning: If the wearer of the breathing apparatus feels dizzy, uncomfortable or can smell/taste something, he should immediately
evacuate the contaminated area.
4.1.2. COMPACT AIR Filter canisters
•
Read the enclosed instructions before connecting the filter canisters. Different types of COMPACT AIR filter canisters must be
used according to the nature of the particular hazardous substances to be encountered; refer to attached Declaration of
Conformity.
4.1.3. Filter usage limitations
•
Always fit 3 identical filter canisters, to ensure an evenly distributed air flow. A different or older type of gas filter canister will be
exhausted sooner and so render the filtering action of the COMPACT AIR totally ineffective.
