Assembling the MDM-1 FOX
Fit the wing joiner through the fuselage and slide the wings onto it, engaging the four
incidence pegs in the holes in the root fairings. Connect the aileron and airbrake
servos to the extension leads which are permanently plugged into the receiver.
Connect the clevis on the elevator pushrod to the elevator horn, then fix the tailplane
to the fuselage using the two M4 socket-head cap screws provided. Tighten the
screws just to the point where the tailplane rests squarely on the saddle, without slop.
Engage the wing retainer system to hold the wing panels against the fuselage. Slide
the pilots' seat support assembly forward into the slots in the former, and allow the
rear end to engage over the front incidence pegs. Place the canopy on the fuselage,
fitting the two metal pegs into the holes at the front and the canopy latch at the rear.
Balancing the MDM-1 FOX
Assemble the model completely, ready to fly, and support it at a point about 102 to
106 mm aft of the wing root leading edge on both sides of the fuselage. The model
should now balance level, ideally with the nose inclined slightly down. Lead ballast
will be required in the nose, and this must be fixed to the fuselage permanently and
immovably. Adjusting the position of the receiver battery can be useful for fine-
trimming. Before flying the model for the first time, check that all the control surfaces
are exactly at centre (neutral position) when the transmitter sticks and trims are at
centre.
Control surface travels:
Ailerons
Elevator
Rudder
We suggest setting about 4 mm up-elevator trim to counteract the pitch trim change
when the airbrakes are deployed.
We recommend 45% exponential on the aileron and elevator functions.
The stated travels are only a recommended starting point; you may well wish to
adjust them to suit your personal preference.
Important:
When installing and setting up the control surface linkages it is vital to ensure that
they work smoothly, are able to carry out their full movement - including trim travel -
without being impeded, and are not mechanically obstructed at any point.
When you move the rudder stick to the right, the rudder must also deflect to the right
(left stick: left rudder). If you pull the elevator stick back towards you, both elevators
should deflect up (stick forward: elevator down).
Move the aileron stick to the right, and the right-hand aileron should deflect up, the
left-hand aileron down. The airbrakes should be assigned to the non self-centring
(throttle) stick: stick fully back: airbrakes extended.
The airbrakes are very powerful, so please extend them slowly and gradually. In most
cases raising them by 5 mm is quite sufficient.
