Changing the Sanding Belt

(see figures
+
A
B
Before any work on the machine itself, pull the
mains plug.
Swivel out the clamping lever 7 fully. The sanding
belt is now loose and can be taken off.
Mount a new sanding belt.
The arrows on the inside of the sanding belt
and the machine housing should indicate the
same direction.
Swivel the clamping lever 7 back again to its orig-
inal position.
Lift the machine from where it is lying and switch
it on. Correct the position of the belt by pressing
the adjusting knob 8 until the edge of the sanding
belt runs flush with the backing plate.
Make sure that the sanding belt does not rub into
the housing. Check the position of the sanding
belt regularly and if necessary, correct it again
using the adjusting knob 8.
Store sanding belts only hanging; avoid creasing,
as this makes the belts unusable!
Starting Operation
Observe correct mains voltage: The voltage of
the power source must agree with the voltage
specified on the nameplate of the machine.
Equipment marked with 230 V can also be con-
nected to 220 V.

Switching On and Off

To start the machine, press the On/Off switch 4
and keep it depressed.
Lock the pushed On/Off switch 4 by pressing the
lock-on button 2.
To switch off the machine, release the On/Off
switch 4 or, when locked on with the lock-on but-
ton 2, briefly press the On/Off switch 4 and then
release.
Speed and Sanding Belt Pre-selection
(GBS 100 AE)
The necessary belt speed can be pre-selected
with thumbwheel 5, even during operation.
The required belt speed depends on the material
being sanded and is to be determined by practi-
cal testing (see application table at the end of the
operating instruction manual).

)
Removal rate and surface quality are determined
by the speed (GBS 100 AE) and grade of the
sanding belt. The higher the belt speed, the more
material is removed and the finer the sanded sur-
face.
Work using the least possible sanding pressure;
the machine's own weight is sufficient for a good
sanding performance. This gives longer life to the
sanding belt, makes the workpiece surface
smoother and reduces the energy consumption.
Apply the machine to the workpiece only when
switched on. Work with moderate feed and carry
out the sanding with parallel and overlapping
strokes. Sand in the direction of the grain; sand-
ing across the grain produces an uneven sanding
effect.
Particularly when sanding coats of varnish, it is
possible that these melt and smear the surface of
the workpiece and the sanding belt. Therefore
sanding dust must be extracted as described un-
der "Dust Extraction".
Worn, clogged or torn sanding belts can damage
the workpiece. The sanding belts should there-
fore be changed in good time.
A sanding belt used for sanding metal should
not be used for other materials.
With the base unit* and the parallel and angle
guide*, trimmings and profiles, as an example,
can be sanded to shape.
Using the sanding frame* an even, controllable
sanding performance is possible when surface
grinding larger wooden surfaces (* Accessory).
Remove any clogged sanding dust with a paint-
brush. From time to time remove the protective
cap 9 and clean the dust passage 10 so that the
suction performance remains at an optimum level
