• Put the round low voltage plug of the wall plug transformer in the respective socket
on the docking station.
• Insert one or more SATA hard drives/SSDs in the docking station.
• Switch on the docking station.
You can also connect the docking station to a USB 2.0 port on your computer,
if it does not have a USB 3.0 port. In this case, the maximum speed for the
data transmission will, of course, be correspondingly lower.
Inserting the hard drive/SSD into the docking station
• Disconnect the docking station from the power supply or switch it off.
• Insert a SATA hard drive/SSD (either 8.89 cm/3.5" or 6.35 cm/2.5") with the correct
orientation in one of the openings of the docking station. Do not exert any force. Do
not touch the hard drive/SSD on the electronic components!
• Connect the docking station to the power supply or switch it on.
Removing the hard drive/SSD from the docking station
• Disconnect the docking station from the power supply or switch it off.
• With a hard drive you first have wait until the magnetic discs in the hard drive have
come to a complete standstill. This can take up to 30 seconds.
• Pull the hard drive/SSD vertically up and out.
Partitioning/Formatting a Hard Drive/SSD
A new hard drive/SSD must be partitioned and formatted before it will ap-
pear e.g. in the Windows File Manager and before it can be used.
• In Windows XP or higher, partitioning and formatting is easily accessible via the
control panel (via Computer Management/Disk Management).
• After partitioning, the newly created partition has to be formatted (fast formatting
is sufficient; "normal" formatting may take very long to complete depending on the
size of the hard disc).
Tips & Notes
a) USB 3.0
• USB 3.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the docking station
with SATA hard discs/SSDs installed will also function with standard USB 2.0 or
slower USB 1.1 ports - but then, only at the maximum USB 2.0 or USB 1.1. speed.
• For USB 3.0, the cable should be selected to be as short as possible to avoid a re-
duction in the transfer speed.
• To connect the docking station to a USB 3.0 port of your computer, you must use a
USB 3.0 cable (e.g., the one included in the package).
If you use a conventional USB 2.0/1.1 cable, only the max. speed supported by USB
2.0/1.1 can be achieved and not the transmission speed supported by the USB 3.0
cable.
• If you want to connect the docking station via a USB hub, the latter must also sup-
port the USB 3.0 transfer mode, in order to reach the maximum speed.
b) eSATA
• When using the eSATA port of your computer to connect the docking station, make
sure that it supports so-called "hot swapping" (connection / disconnection during
operation).
If this is not the case, then, sometimes, when connecting to a computer that is al-
ready running, the docking station with inserted hard drives/SSDs will not be de-
tected.
Any disconnection during operation could lead to a loss of data.
Both the hardware (the eSATA controller) and its driver must support "hot
swapping".
When in doubt, you should disconnect the eSATA connection (or switch off the
docking station) only after the computer has been switched off.
• The eSATA controller has to be "Port Multiplier"-compatible in order for more than
one hard drive/SSD to work on an eSATA port. If this is not the case, only one of the
up to three hard drives/SSDs on the docking station will be recognised.
• If you face any problems with the eSATA connection, use the USB 3.0 port of the
docking station for test purposes (in this case, the eSATA port has to be discon-
nected).
c) General
• The power LED in the on/off switch of the docking station lights up when the latter is
switched on.
• One LED per slot serves as access control (LED flashes during read/write access-
es).
• USB devices may be connected and disconnected when the computer is running
(with eSATA, only if the eSATA controller and its driver support "Hot Swapping").
Therefore, you should keep in mind that files might be damaged or the operating
system might crash if the connection cable is unplugged during data transfer or if
the docking station is switched off.
A hard drive/SSD may only be inserted in the docking station (or removed
from the docking station) if the docking station has been switched off (no
LED on the docking station lights up).
Otherwise, this may not only cause the loss of data but also may lead to the
damage of the hard drive/SSD or the docking station.
• You can also connect the docking station to a USB 2.0 port on your computer, if it
does not have a USB 3.0 port. In this case, the maximum speed for the data transmis-
sion will, of course, be correspondingly lower.
• Do not move the docking station with a hard drives installed when the hard drives
are in use. Otherwise, the read/write head may touch the magnet disc of the hard
drive which will damage it.
With SSDs there is no such risk since the drive does not contain any moving parts.
Maintenance and Cleaning
The product is maintenance-free. Repair or maintenance work must be carried out
by a specialist.
You can use a clean, dry, soft cloth for cleaning. Dust can be very easily removed with
a soft, clean brush and a vacuum cleaner.
Do not use aggressive, chemical or scouring cleaning agents, as this may lead to dis-
colouration or changes in the material on the surface.
Disposal
The product must not be disposed of in the household waste.
Dispose of the product at the end of its serviceable life in accordance with
the current statutory requirements; e.g., return it to any suitable collection
point.
