• Install smoke detectors in close proximity of the bedrooms. Also plan for escape routes from
bedrooms; those rooms are usually the farthest from the exit. If you have more than one
bedroom, install a smoke detector in every bedroom.
This also extends to other rooms providing sleeping facilities (such as children's room, guest
room, etc.).
• Install smoke detectors in order to safeguard stairways; stairways act easily like chimneys for
smoke and fire, and may contribute to further fire spread.
• Make sure to install at least one smoke detector on each floor.
• Install a smoke detector in every room where electrical appliances are present (e.g.TV in the
living room). Often those devices in particular pose a risk of heavy, toxic smoke formation.
• It is recommended to install more than one smoke detector, if the rooms are larger.
• Smoke and other combustion residues rise upwards to the ceiling and spread horizontally.
Mount smoke detectors on the ceiling in the centre of the room, this paces it closest to all
other points in the room.
• In normal residential buildings, mount the mini smoke detector on the ceiling to achieve
optimum safety. However, in caravans or motorhomes mounting on a vertical wall is required
instead to avoid that a thermal barrier may form at the ceiling.
• In case of ceiling mount, make sure that the mini smoke detector is at least 100 cm away
from the side walls. If mounted on a wall, the mini smoke detector should be a maximum of
30 cm below the ceiling.
• On an attic floor with a sloped ceiling, ensure that the mini smoke detector is installed 90 cm
at or within the highest point. It is recommended to install a smoke detector on each slope in
rooms with a greater rise.
Unfavourable installation sites for smoke detectors
The following installation sites should be avoided:
• Kitchen/bathroom and toilet: The cooking fumes or water vapours present in these rooms
may trigger a false alarm. Moreover, deposits will accumulate in the sensor.
• Garages: A vehicle's exhaust fumes may trigger a false alarm in garages
• Near doors, windows, heaters or air conditioners
• Rooms where the temperature is very low or very high
• Gable ceiling: Hot air (e.g., in summer or when heating the room) may accumulate here,
which would prevent the fumes of a dangerous smouldering fire from reaching the smoke
detector.
• Ceilings in caravans or similar: The sun heats up the room ceiling and hence the air in the
upper part of the caravan. The hot air keeps the fumes of a dangerous smouldering fire from
reaching the smoke detector.
• Walls in immobile residential buildings: Smoke is detected very late, and thus the alert is
delayed. We recommend ceiling mount as described above.
• Corners in buildings: Smoke is detected very late, and thus the alert is delayed.
• Inaccessible places prevent pressing the test button.
Attaching the label
Type labels in different languages are included in the package.
Attach the label with your language to the bottom of the mini smoke detector before installing
it. Stick it over the existing (German language) label.
Installation and operation of the mini smoke detector
It is important to attend to the preceding sections of these operating instructions
before the installation.
• Use the mounting plate included as a template and draw bores using the two outer recessed
holes (distance between bores 32 mm).
• Fasten the mounting plate with suitable screws; use wall anchors, if necessary.
Make sure that you do not damage any wires or lines during the process of fastening
or drilling.
For safety reasons, we advise against the use of adhesive tape or magnetic plate for
fitting.
The mounting plate holds a small plastic pin, see picture on
the right.
If you carefully break it out, you can later put it into a small
hole (after the mini smoke detector is installed on the mount-
ing plate).
This is to prevent that the mini smoke detector is
all too easily detached from the mounting plate
(e.g., by playing children).
You will find the hole for the plastic pin near the
test button at the edge of the housing, see figure
on the right.
• Place the mini smoke detector on the mounting plate (only
possible in two 180° offset positions).
• Turn the mini smoke detector in a clockwise direction a little
to the right so that it snaps into the mounting plate.
A small plastic lug in the mounting plate actuates a switch in the mini smoke alarm
detector when it is attached and locked. The permanently installed and non-replace-
able battery is thus connected to the electronics.
• The mini smoke detector is now ready for operation. Perform the functional test, see next
section.
• The test button LED will flash briefly every 48 seconds as an indication that mini smoke
detector is properly functioning.
Performing the functional test
Test the mini smoke detector once a week by briefly pressing the small test button on the side.
The mini smoke detector will then emit 5 acoustic signals while the LED in the test button will
flash 5 times.
Never use a lighter or the like to perform the functional test. This can result in fire
and may damage the mini smoke detector.
Attention, the acoustic signals are very loud!
Nuisance alarm
Cigarette smoke or steam produced while cooking can active the mini smoke detector. Nui-
sance alarms are also possible in case of exposure to dust when grinding (e.g., when renovat-
ing a room) or if too much hair spray/deodorant is sprayed in a room.
If the mini smoke detector gives an alarm, check first whether the fire is real. If fire or smoke is
discovered, alert your family, and everyone must leave the building. Call the fire department.
If there is no fire or smoke, check whether the above-mentioned reasons could have triggered
the alarm.
Mute button
You can mute the mini smoke detector in cases, when the alarm was triggered, for example, by
steam during cooking or similar and no "real" fire is involved.
Hold down the test button for 3 seconds during the alarm. The alarm will stop and the sensitivity
of the mini smoke detector sensor is lowered for a period of 10 minutes. The LED in the test
button will flash every 8 seconds throughout this time.
If the smoke level rises sharply during these 10 minutes, the LED flashes 4 times
and the alarm function is reactivated while the mini smoke detector emits 5 acoustic
signals and the LED in the test button flashes 5 times.
After 10 minutes the mute mode will exit automatically and the smoke detector returns to nor-
mal operation. If smoke particles are still present in the measuring chamber after 10 minutes,
the alarm will restart.
The functional test can proceed during mute mode.
