mode will be started with the parameters chosen. A detailled
description of the sweep mode can be found in chapter 5.3
"Sweep menu".
Leaving the sweep mode is only possible by pres-
sing the SWP button again.

Output

The signal output has an impedance of 50 ohms. The button
STOP
Output
switches the output signal on/off including any
offset. In the off position the output will show an open circuit.
The LED adjacent to the button Output will indicate the status
of the output.
Due to residual crosstalk there is some signal feed-
through at high frequencies, typically the
attenuation will amount to appr. –60 dB at 1 MHz.
HINT
Do not apply any voltages to the output terminal,
this may destroy the output stage. The output is
short-circuit proof. External voltages up to ±15 V
STOP
STOP
for less than 30 sec will be tolerated.

Main menu 1

From main menu 1 three other menus are accessible. The
pushbutton below the arrow will call main menu 2.

Operating mode (working mode)

The HM8131-2 features various operating modes. The standard
mode is Cnt (continuous) or free-running. Trg designates the
triggered mode and Gat the gated mode. Several HM 8131-2
may be synchronized. The selected mode will be indicated with
a triangle in the left portion of the display.
Instruments are programmed for Cnt mode when
leaving the factory.

Sweep Arb Mode -->
Free-running (Cnt)
The generator is freerunning with the frequency displayed, the
signal is continuously available at the output, provided the sweep
mode was not activated.
Trigger (Trg)
Pushing [Trg] will call the menu "TRIGGER CONTROL". First + or
– slope is selected. The trigger signal is applied to the terminal

TRIG.INP
. By nature this mode is synchronous, upon receipt
of a trigger the output signal will start at zero. Depending on
the duration of the trigger signal one or more complete signal
periods will be generated, periods started will be always com-
pleted. This way also bursts can be generated.
The trigger mode is available for all signal func-
tions (waveforms) within their frequency limits. For
sine, square wave, triangle and arbitrary the upper
limit is 500 kHz.
STOP
A single signal period may also be triggered by
pushing "pulse" while in the "TRIGGER CONTROL"
menu.
HINT
Triggering on the rising edge
The positive slope of the trigger will start the sine wave, the last
sine period will be completed after the negative trigger slope.
