Handling Precautions
Damage to the hard drive may result if these simple
handling precautions are not followed:
Allow the drive to reach room temperature before
installing it in the computer.
Handle the drive by its sides. Do not touch the
circuit board (electronics).
Do not connect/disconnect any drive cables when
the power is on.
Do not drop, jar, or bump the drive.
System/OS Requirements
• A full version of your operating system (OS) is
required for a new hard drive installation
(see kit package for details)
Tools for Installation
The following tools are needed to install your new
Maxtor hard drive:
• Small Phillips head screw driver
• Small pair of pliers or tweezers
• Your computer user's manuals
• Operating system software
Backup Your Data
Maxtor highly recommends that you make a backup
copy of your files before installing the new Maxtor
hard drive. Please refer to your computer user's manual
for more information.
Drive-to-Drive Copying
If you plan to copy data from one hard drive to
another, don't place the drives on the same cable as
master and slave. Both drives must be set as Masters
and physically attached to their own interface cable.
Important – Capacity Notice
Maxtor Hard Drive with ATA Adapter Card
Install the ATA adapter card first – following the
instructions in the guide that came with your card.
Then using this guide install your new Maxtor hard
drive. Maxtor recommends that you use MaxBlast
installation software, rather than FDISK, to see the
drives' full capacity. If you have purchased a drive over
132GB, Maxtor strongly recommends that you use a
Maxtor Ultra ATA 133 PCI card to obtain the full
benefits of these high capacity drives.
Maxtor Hard Drive without an ATA Adapter Card
Check your system requirements. Some older systems
require the use of an ATA adapter card to get the full
benefits of higher capacity drives. Maxtor recommends
that you use MaxBlast installation software, rather than
FDISK, to see the drive's full capacity.
