MOISTURE CONTENT METER
USER'S MANUAL
Wood group selec on
To achieve the greatest possible measurement accuracy in
the various types of wood, wood group selec on bu on
should be set to the appropriate wood group before any
measurements are taken.
As far as the majority of European and Exo c mbers are concerned in the
tables from page 6, indicate which wood group they belong to. For kinds of
mber not listed in the table, wood group 3 should be selected.
The range of the wood groups is from 1 to 4.
Two special Wood groups for Scandinavian grown Scots Pine Pinus
sylvestris ("Pine") and Norway Spruce Picea excelsa ("Spruce") are also
included.
NOTE: The "Pine" and "Spruce" wood groups are only valid in the range of
7-23 % Moisture Content. For dryer or more moist value use WG3.
The op mum se ng for types of wood which are new on the market or as
yet unknown should be determined by test measurements and oven-dry
tests un l constant weight is achieved.
Measuring
The measuring result is valid un l the value is not moving anymore.
Temperature compensa on
The range of the temperature compensa on is from 0 - 99°C.
If this bu on is pressed, the temperature value (T.) will
increase in steps of 1°C. If this bu on is kept pressed longer
than 1 second, the temperature value and the velocity will
increase as long this bu on is kept pressed or
if this bu on is pressed, the temperature value (T.) will
decrease in steps of 1°C. If this bu on is kept pressed longer
than 1 second, the temperature value will decrease and the
velocity will increase as long this bu on is kept pressed.
The temperature compensa on value of the MC-460 has to be set with the
real temperature of the mber, because the measuring of the humidity
of the wood is depending on the real temperature of the wood. The
measured value is then already corrected when it is displayed.
Facts
When measuring with an electrical resistance type Moisture meter a
current is fl owing into the wood piece. This current is actual ionizing the
material that the wood contains of ( Cell membrane, water etc.)
As an result the resistance fl uctuates giving a fl uctua on and dri of the
Moisture Content readout. On higher Moisture Content levels the accuracy
of the measurement depends on how well the user is to make an es mate
of the average the varying MC value.
With the new polariza on feature the ionizing is avoided so that the MC-
460 provides fast and stable measurements to the user.
Always measure several measuring points. It is not certain that
a single measurement point is representa ve for the complete
mber volume.
Check that the electrodes are not bent and securely ghtened to
the probe.
The electrodes shall be inserted crosswise the grain.
Avoid twigs.
The measuring result is only valid for the measuring point and the
penetra on depth that electrodes are inserted to.

Backlight
A er turning on the MC-460 the illumina on of the display is
on. The illumina on can be turned off or on with this bu on.
The intensity can be reduced in the menu to reduce power
consump on.
Power supply
The MC-460 is equipped with a usual trade 9-Volt alkaline block ba ery
6LR21 or 6F22. It is located in the ba ery compartment on the backside
below the ba ery compartment of the instrument. When exhausted, may
be replaced with any commercially available 9-Volt ba ery of the same
size. Only leak-proof ba eries should be used, since if any vapours were to
escape they could damage the electronic circuits.
Ba ery status
To guarantee an excellent consistence of measurements for all built-in
stabilising and compensa on circuits, it is necessary to prevent ba ery
voltage from falling below the minimum permi ed.
For this reason, the unit is equipped with a ba ery status indica on.
new
If ba ery voltage drops below the minimum permi ed an early warning
message appear on the display as follow:
Nevertheless it is s ll possible to take measure-ments with undiminished
accuracy –approx. a few hundreds more – it is advisable to replace the
ba ery now. This is to avoid a total black out of the value indica on.
If a certain bu on will be pressed this message will disappear and it is
possible to con nue the measuring. Nothing will be infl uenced by this.
Each me the unit will be turned on and the ba ery is low, this message
will appear.
Changing the ba ery
The ba ery lid is located at the back side of the MC-460. Open the lid
using a fi ngernail between the housing and the coverlet and press slightly
against the small interlock (arrow) to li the cover plate. Flip the open case
onto the other open hand and the ba ery falls out. When inser ng the
ba eries respec ng the polarity while the lower part of the ba ery has to
be inserted fi rst in the ba ery box, then the poles. Close ba ery lid.
