19. recovery
When removing refrigerant from a system, whether for maintenance or decommissioning, it is
recommended good practice that all refrigerants are safely removed.
When transferring refrigerant into cylinders, ensure that only suitable refrigerant recovery cylinders are
used. Ensure that the correct number of cylinders are available to hold the entire system charge. All
cylinders to be used are for the recovered refrigerant and labelled accordingly (i.e. special refrigerant
recovery cylinders). The cylinders must be complete with pressure reducing valve and associated shut-
off valves in good working order. Empty recovery cylinders shall be evacuated and, if possible, cooled
before recovery.
The recovery system shall be in good working order and have instructions for the existing system suitable
for the recovery of all suitable refrigerants, including flammable refrigerants where applicable. A set of
calibrated scales must also be available and in good working order. The hoses must be fully fitted with
leak-free disconnect couplings and be in good condition. Before using the recovery unit, check that it is
in good working order, has been properly maintained and that all associated electrical components
are sealed to prevent ignition in the event of a refrigerant release. If in doubt, contact the
manufacturer.
The recovered refrigerant must be returned to the refrigerant supplier in the correct recovery bottle and
an appropriate waste transfer note issued. Do not mix refrigerants in recovery equipment and especially
not in cylinders.
If compressors or compressor oils are to be disposed of, ensure that they have been evacuated to an
acceptable level to ensure that no flammable refrigerant remains in the lubricant. The evacuation
process must be carried out before the compressor is returned to the supplier. To speed up this process,
the compressor housing must only be heated electrically. The draining of oil from a system must be
done safely.
20 Transport of equipment containing flammable refrigerants.
To be determined by local regulations.
21. disposal of equipment containing flammable refrigerants.
See national regulations.
22. storage of equipment/appliances
Storage of equipment should be in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
23. storage of packaged (unsold) equipment.
The protection of the storage packaging should be designed in such a way that mechanical damage
to the equipment inside the packaging does not lead to leakage of the refrigerant charge.
The maximum number of units that may be stored together is determined by local regulations.
24 Competence of Service Personnel General
When an appliance containing flammable refrigerants is involved, special training is required in addition
to the usual information on installation, repair, maintenance and decommissioning of refrigeration
appliances.
In many countries, training for these procedures is provided by national training organisations that are
accredited to teach the relevant national competence standards that may be set out in legislation.
The competence acquired should be documented by a certificate.
25 Training
Training should include the following content:
Information on the explosion potential of flammable refrigerants to show that flammable substances
can be dangerous if handled carelessly.
Information on possible ignition sources, especially those that are not obvious, such as lighters, light
switches, hoovers, electric heaters.
Information about the various safety concepts:
Unventilated - The safety of the appliance does not depend on the ventilation of the enclosure.
Switching off the appliance or opening the enclosure has no significant effect on safety. However, it is
possible for leaking refrigerant to accumulate inside the enclosure and release flammable atmosphere
when the enclosure is opened.
