Remove refrigerant; purge the circuit with inert gas;
-evacuate;
-purge again with inert gas;
-open the circuit by cutting or brazing.
The refrigerant charge must be returned to the correct recovery cylinders. For units containing
flammable refrigerants, the system must be "purged" with OFN to make the unit safe. This process may
need to be repeated several times. Compressed air or oxygen must not be used to purge refrigerant
systems.
For equipment containing flammable refrigerants, purging shall be accomplished by breaking the
vacuum in the system with OFN and continuing to charge the system until the working pressure is
reached, then venting to atmosphere and finally exhausting to a vacuum. This process must be
repeated until there is no more refrigerant in the system. When the last OFN charge is used up, the
system must be vented to atmospheric pressure so that work can be carried out. This procedure is
essential if soldering work is to be carried out on the piping.
Care must be taken that the outlet of the vacuum pump is not near sources of ignition and that
ventilation is provided.
16. charging procedures
In addition to conventional charging procedures, the following requirements shall be observed.
-It shall be ensured that there is no contamination of the various refrigerants when charging equipment
is used. Hoses or lines shall be as short as possible to minimise the amount of refrigerant they contain.
-Cylinders must be kept upright.
-Make sure the refrigeration system is grounded before charging with refrigerant. Tag the system after
filling is complete (if not already done).
-Care must be taken that the refrigeration system is not overfilled.
-Before filling the system, carry out a pressure test with the appropriate purge gas. After completion of
the filling process, but before commissioning, the system must be subjected to a leak test. A new leak
test shall be carried out before leaving the site.
17. decommissioning
Before carrying out this procedure, it is important that the technician is familiar with the system and all
the details. It is recommended as good practice to recover all refrigerants safely. An oil and refrigerant
sample must be taken prior to performing the task in case analysis is required before reusing the
recovered refrigerant. It is important that electricity is available before starting the task.
a.
Familiarise yourself with the unit and its operation.
b.
Disconnect the system electrically.
c.
Before carrying out the procedure, make sure that:
. mechanical handling equipment is available for handling refrigerant cylinders, if required;
. all personal protective equipment is present and used correctly;
. the recovery process is supervised by a competent person at all times;
. the recovery equipment and gas cylinders comply with the relevant standards.
a.
Pump out the refrigerant system, if possible.
b.
If a vacuum is not possible, make a manifold through which the refrigerant can be removed
from various parts of the system.
c.
Ensure that the cylinder is on balance before recovery takes place.
d.
Start the recovery unit and work according to the manufacturer's instructions.
e.
Do not overfill the cylinders. (Not more than 80% of the volume of the liquid filling).
f.
Do not exceed the maximum working pressure of the bottle, even temporarily.
g.
When the cylinders are properly filled and the process is complete, ensure that the cylinders
and equipment are immediately removed from the site and all shut-off valves on the equipment are
closed.
h.
Recovered refrigerant must not be charged into another refrigeration system until it has been
cleaned and checked.
18. labelling
The equipment shall be labelled to show that it has been taken out of service and the refrigerant has
been discharged. The label shall be dated and signed. In the case of equipment containing flammable
refrigerants, ensure that the equipment is provided with labels indicating that it contains flammable
refrigerants.
