Directions for Use

Note: In cases where fluid runoff is expected, place an absorbent cloth
beneath the model 58501 warming blanket.
1. Lay the non-perforated side of the warming blanket (side with
adhesive) on the table. The perforated side (side with small holes)
must be toward the patient in direct contact with the patient's skin.
Align the lower edge of the warming blanket with the end of the
procedure table. Using the adhesive tape strips on the underside
of the blanket, secure the blanket to the table to prevent it from
slipping (Figure A).
A
2. Tuck the warming blanket's tuck flaps under the mattress or
operating table pad to provide stability (Figure B).
B
Continue with Step 3 or go to ALTERNATE PATIENT POSITION.
3. For Lithotomy Position Using a Draw Sheet
If using a draw sheet or securement device (i.e. safety strap, tape),
tear open the perforations along both sides of the warming blanket.
NOTE: Do not open the side perforations if a draw sheet or a
securement device are not used. Before you inflate the blanket, lay
the draw sheet across the mid-section of the blanket and position
the patient on the draw sheet.
4. OPTIONAL: Tie strips located at the base of the warming blanket
may be opened and loosely tied around the patient's upper thigh.
(Figure C).
WARNING: Do not tie tightly as the tie strips around the patient's
legs could act as a tourniquet.
C
5. OPTIONAL: The non-inflated center arc-shaped section may be
removed by tearing along the perforation (Figure D).
D
6. Bring the draw sheet over the patient's arms and down through
the side perforations on the warming blanket (Figure E). Tuck
the ends of the draw sheet securely. (Figure F). If a securement
device is being used, pass the securement device through the side
perforation on the blanket.
WARNING: If a securement device (i.e. safety strap, tape) is used,
ensure the warming channels are not occluded.

7. A hose port is provided at the head of the warming blanket. Insert
the end of the Bair Hugger warming unit hose into the hose port
(Figures G and H). Use a twisting motion to ensure a snug fit.
A visual marker is located around the mid-section of the hose
end to guide the depth of hose insertion. Support hose to insure
secure attachment.
WARNING: Do not treat patients with the Bair Hugger hose
alone. Always attach the hose to a Bair Hugger blanket before
providing therapy.

8. If the patient is intubated and ventilated, position the head drape
over the patient's head and neck.
WARNING: Do not allow the head drape to cover the patient's head
or airway when the patient is not mechanically ventilated.
9. Select the desired temperature setting on the warming unit to
initiate warming therapy. (See the Operator Manual for your specific
Warming Unit Model)
CAUTION: Patient Monitoring Recommendations:
• 3M recommends continuously monitoring core temperature. In
the absence of continuous monitoring, monitor the temperature
of patients who are incapable of reacting, communicating
and/or who cannot sense temperature a minimum of every
15 minutes or according to institutional protocol.
• Monitor cutaneous responses of patients who are incapable
of reacting, communicating and/or who cannot sense
temperature a minimum of every 15 minutes or according to
institutional protocol.
• Adjust air temperature or discontinue therapy when the
therapeutic goal is reached, if elevated temperatures are
recorded or if there is an adverse cutaneous response in the
warmed area.
10. Based on the warming unit model utilized, turn the unit off or
to standby mode to discontinue warming therapy. Disconnect
the hose from the warming blanket and discard the blanket per
hospital policy.
Supine Position Using Arm Boards
Before placing the patient on the warming blanket, open the side
perforations. Extend the patient's arms through the open perforations
and position on the arm board (Figure I). Continue with Step 7.
