Set-Up and Operation

WARNING
Set up the roll groover and the work area according
to these procedures to reduce the risk of injury
from electric shock, machine tipping, crushing and
other causes, and to help prevent machine damage.
1. Check work area for:
• Adequate lighting.
• Flammable liquids, vapors or dust that may ignite.
If present, do not work in area until source is identi-
fied, removed or corrected, and area is completely
ventilated.
• Clear, clean, level, stable and dry place for all equip-
ment and operator. Clean up any oil that may be
present.

• Properly grounded electrical outlet of the correct
voltage. Check the machine serial plate for required
voltage. A three-prong or GFCI outlet may not be
properly grounded. If in doubt, have outlet inspected
by a licensed electrician.
2. Inspect the pipe to be grooved and determine the
correct tool for the job, see Specifications. Grooving
equipment for other applications can be found in the
RIDGID catalog online at RIDGID.com. Do not use
to groove anything other than straight stock. Do not
groove pipe with protrusions or outlets such as Tees
or elbows. This increases the risk of entanglement.
3. Confirm all equipment to be used has been properly
inspected and assembled. Confirm that the correct
grooving roll set is installed in the roll groover for the
application.
Use of roll sets (groove roll and drive roll) on
NOTICE
both carbon and stainless steel pipe can lead to contam-
ination of the stainless steel material. This contamination
could cause corrosion and premature pipe failure. To pre-
vent ferrous contamination of stainless steel pipe, use roll
sets dedicated for stainless steel grooving. Alternately, a
stainless steel wire brush can be used to thoroughly clean
the roll set when switching between materials.
4. Set up 918-I in the work area. Confirm that the ON/
OFF Switch is in the OFF position.
5. If desired the 918-I Stand can be bolted to the floor for
additional stability. See Figure 1.
6. Position the foot switch for proper operation as shown
in Figure 16.
7 . Confirm that the hydraulic pump is in operation posi-
tion.
8. With the ON/OFF Switch in OFF position, run the cord
along a clear path. With dry hands, plug the power
cord into properly grounded outlet. Keep all connec-
tions dry and off the ground. If the power cord is not
long enough, use an extension cord that:
• Is in good condition.
• Has a three-prong plug like on the roll groover.
• Is rated for outdoor use and contains a W or W-A in
the cord designation (e.g., SOW).
• Has sufficient wire size. For extension cords up to
50' (15.2 m) long use 16 AWG (1.5 mm
For extension cords 50'-100' (15.2 m - 30.5 m) long
use 14 AWG (2.5 mm
9. Check the machine for proper operation. With hands
clear of moving parts:
• Move the ON/OFF Switch to the ON position. Press
and release the foot switch. Check that the groove
