Usage notes when used horizontally:
This lanyard with an integrated shock absorber has also been successfully tested for
horizontal use and hence, a simulated fall over an edge. In doing this, a steel edge was used
(without a flash) with a radius r = 0.5 mm. Due to this test, the equipment is suitable for use
via similar edges, for example, like the ones found on rolled steel sections, on wooden
beams or on an uncovered, chamfered parapet.
Regardless of this test, in the case of horizontal or angular use, where there is a risk of a fall
over an edge, the following points must be taken into consideration:
1. If the risk assessment carried out before the start of work indicates that the fall-zone edge
relates to a particularly 'cutting' and/or 'non-burr free' edge (e.g. an uncovered parapet,
trapezoid sheeting or a sharp concrete edge) then
appropriate arrangements should be made before the start of work so that a fall
over the edge is ruled out
an edge protector should be installed before the start of work or
contact should be made with the manufacturer.
2.
The lanyard is tested over an edge with an angle of 90°. The user should be clear about
the increased hazards that exist when it is possible to fall over an edge with an angle of
less than 90° (measured between the two side pieces of the fastener e.g. if the
attachment point is located below the feet of the user or, in the case of a roof running
upwards, at an angle) and that additional preventative measures or additional tests may
be necessary.
3. The required clearance below the edge is at least 5.25 m
4.
The subsystem should always be used so that the slack rope formation is kept as limited
as possible in the proximity of areas with a potential fall hazard. An adjustment lanyard
should not be set if, at the same time, the user moves in the direction of an area where
there is a fall hazard.
5. In order to limit a pendular fall, the working area and/or lateral movements from the
central axis to both sides should, in each case, be restricted to 1.50 m (max.).
6. If this lanyard with an integral shock absorber is used with an anchoring device of class C
accordance with EN 795, then the deflection of the horizontal, mobile retainer should also
be considered when determining the required height below the user.
7.
Note: In the case of a fall over an edge, there is a risk of injury during the harnessing
action as a result of the falling person crashing into structural members and/or structural
parts.
8. Special rescue measures should be defined and exercised for the event of a fall over the
edge.
