Operating Instructions
WARNING!
Read
and the accompanying safety booklet
carefully before using this equipment. If
you are uncertain about any aspect of using this
tool, contact your RIDGID distributor for more
information.
Failure to understand and follow all instructions
may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious
personal injury.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS!
Specifications
See current RIDGID Kollmann catalogue.
Transport and handling
The transport and handling of the machine is straightforward.
Refer to figures 1, 2, 3.
Machine set-up
KEEP THESE INSTRUCTIONS!
These machines are designed for cleaning drains using RIDGID
Kollmann cables and tools. We strongly recommend that it NOT
be modified and/or used for any application other than for which it
was intended including powering other equipment.
• Place machine away from doors or passageways and ensure that the
total work area can be viewed from the operating position. Use barriers to
keep people away.
• Do not use machine in wet or humid conditions.
• Check that machine voltage is the same as the power supply.
• Ensure air tool actuator switch operates correctly and motor switch is in
"0" position before connecting to power supply.
• The footswitch allows full control of the machine which will only operate
when the pedal is depressed. For your safety ensure that the footswitch
operates freely and position it so that all controls can be easily reached.
• Check belt guard is correctly installed and that it does not contact drum.
• To install the autofeed of the K-380 (see Fig. 4, 5).
-
Screw handle into autofeed
-
Place the mounting bracket onto back of the autofeed
-
Attach autofeed to front frame of the K-380

Operation
Safety
If you are uncertain about any aspect of using this equipment contact your
RIDGID Distributor.
Ground machine
Always plug the cord into a properly grounded supply socket protected with a
residual current device having a trip current of maximum 30 mA.
Wear standard equipment glove
Keep pulley guard in place at all times.
Position unit within 75 cm from pipe inlet.
Fit correct tool to end of the cable and switch motor switch to on "1"
(see Fig. 6).
Manual feed
1. Grasp cable with both gloved hands and pull approximately 50 cm of
cable from drum creating a slight loop between machine and cable outlet.
2. Depress foot actuator to start machine and at same time use both hands
to feed the cable into the line.
3. Continue to feed until resistance is felt. This is shown by a difficulty to
feed cable into the line and/or a tendency of the cable to kink sideways.
4. If cable loads in obstruction, pull back on cable with short, quick jerks
to free the cutter. Then advance back into the obstruction. Repeat until
obstruction is clear.
Make sure the cutter is rotating at all times and never force the cable.
Note on K-380 torque limiter: this feature will stop the drum from
turning but the motor will keep running until torque is decreased on the
cable after which the drum will turn again.
Using autofeed
1. See section manual feed.
2. Exert downward pressure on cable. Step on foot actuator and push lever
in "advance" position (figure 7A).
3. Keep cable under control but don't force it. Allow it to feed itself into the
drain.
4. Continue until obstruction is reached. Cable will have tendency to twist
sideways in the operator's hand.
5. If cable is twisted, move feed lever in full reverse until cable is straight
again. (Fig. 7B)
6. Gradually feed cable forward to allow cutter to advance slowly and cut
through the obstruction. If cable shows a growing loop between machine
and drain, reverse machine feed to straighten cable. Progress now
depends on sharpness of the tool and nature of obstruction.
If this happens continue with manual feed until the obstruction is cleared.
GENERAL WARNING: do not allow tension to build up in the cable. This
will happen if cutting tool stops turning because of an obstruction. The motor
and drum continue to turn. Torque builds up until the cable suddenly twists,
potentially wrapping around your hand or arm. This can happen quickly and
without warning, so proceed slowly and carefully as you feed the cable into the
drain. If tool gets hung up in an obstruction, see "special procedures".
Note 1: stop machine completely before taking the cable out of the drain inlet.
Turning tool may hurt operator.
Note 2: when retrieving the cable, flush water through drain to clean the
cable.
