Another method to share your Drobo between different computers
is to format it using a file system that several computers understand.
Using the "FAT32" formatting option from the Drobo Dashboard
ensures that Macs, PCs, and Linux machines will be able to read and
write data on Drobo. Note, that FAT32 is an older file system format
that is generally less protective of your data than modern (journaled)
file systems. It also has slower performance and file size limitations.
Finally, both Mac OS X and Windows-based computers have built in
file sharing capabilities. You can use these to share your Drobo with
other computers on your network. The one drawback is that the
computer which is sharing the Drobo must be turned on, in order for
others to get access to the Drobo. To find out more about using your
computer's file sharing capabilities, consult your operating system
documentation.
Note: See page 25 for further details.
Q. Why don't I see more capacity after I delete a large number of files?
A. You will, just be patient. Drobo takes this opportunity to optimize
data layout while reclaiming newly created "empty" space. However,
some utilities (such as Norton® Utilities) have an option to protect
your data from accidental deletion. Be sure to disable that feature in
order to delete data from Drobo. Also, you might have to delete the
files from the Recycle Bin or Trash Can to truly remove the files from
your Drobo.
Q. Why is there data on Drobo before I copy data to it?
A. Your operating system and the Drobo firmware both place a small
amount of formatting information on Drobo's drives prior to any
data transfer.
Q. Why does Drobo seem extremely slow when it's almost full?
A. Instead of refusing to copy files when its capacity is nearly full (over
95%), Drobo instead enters "slow down" mode to alert you to check
the blue capacity gauge. If all ten blue lights are lit, it's time to add
capacity.
Q. My drive bay lights are flashing green and orange. What does this
mean?
A. Your Drobo is actively working to protect your data. You can still use
your Drobo normally, but do not power the unit off when the lights
are flashing, and do not add or remove drives until the lights stop
flashing.
