Operating Instructions
for Explosion Protected STÖBER SMS/MGS Gear Units
Series C,K to EC Directive 94/9/EC
en
This operating manual is a supplement to the operating
manual for normal operation, ID 441972!
1. Installation of the gear unit
The gear unit may be installed / mounted only in the specified
model on a level, vibration-absorbing and torsion-resistant un-
derlying construction. Make sure that there is no tension be-
tween the housing feet and mounting surface and do not exceed
the maximum lateral and axial forces.
Always use bolts of quality 8.8 for mounting the gear unit. For
transmission of the rated torques in the catalog, bolts of quality
10.9 must be used for customer-side mounting for the flange
mounting (housing model G or F).
STOP! If the gear units are equipped with ventilation valves,
they must be accessible.
2. Lubrication
STOP!
The gear units may be operated only in the in-
tended mounting position. The installation label shows
which side of the gear unit must be at the bottom. The oil
quantity filled at the factory and the setup is adjusted ac-
cordingly. Therefore, any modification of the gear units is per-
mitted only after consulting STÖBER.
In the event that a gear unit is opened, e.g. for repairs, the
gear unit must be filled with the specified quantity of the
correct lubricant indicated on the rating plate before it is op-
erated, in order to ensure safe operation.
A change in the model / mounting position is permitted
only after consulting STÖBER Antriebstechnik. Otherwise,
the ATEX approval will be voided.
3. Surface temperature
The surface temperature of the gear units is max. 120°C de-
pending on the speed, transmission ratio and model. Gear units
with higher surface temperatures are approved only after con-
sulting STÖBER Antriebstechnik and must be indicated on the
rating plate. The plant operator must ensure that any accumu-
lation of dust does not exceed a maximum thickness of 5 mm,
according to EN 50281-1/50281-2.
STOP! The maximum permissible ambient temperature is
-20 ≤ ≤ T
≤ ≤ 60 °C.
a
The specification of the maximum surface temperatures on
the rating plate are based on measurements under normal
ambient and installation conditions. Minor changes in these con-
ditions (e.g. restricted installation conditions) can have a signifi-
cant effect on the temperatures.
Do not neglect to measure the surface temperature dur-
ing commissioning of the gear unit at the maximum
load condition (see section 4.2).
The temperature can be measured with standard temperature
measuring devices. Measure the surface temperature at the con-
nection between the gear unit and motor, where the terminal box
position prevents ventilation by the motor fan.
For gear units with a motor adapter or free drive shaft the surface
temperature is measured at the joint between the input gear unit
flange and the attachments.
The maximum surface temperature is reached after about
3 hours under full load and must not exceed a difference of 70K
from the ambient temperature.
If the difference is higher, the drive unit must be shut down im-
mediately. In this case, you must contact STÖBER Antrieb-
stechnik.
4.
Commissioning
4.1
Prior to commissioning
• Inspect the delivery immediately upon receipt to determine any
damage from transport. Report any damage to the transport
company immediately. It may be necessary to postpone com-
missioning.
• Remove any transport safeguards prior to commissioning.
Make sure that the following information on the rating plate of the
gear unit conforms to the approved EX utilization area on site:
Issue: 30.07.2010

device group, EX category, EX zone, temperature class, maxi-
mum surface temperature
• Is it certain that no explosive atmospheres, oils, acids, gases,
vapors or radiation is present during installation of the gear unit?
• Is it certain that the gear units are sufficiently ventilated and no
external heat input (e.g. via couplings) is present? The cooling air
must not exceed a temperature of 40 °C.
• Are all oil control and drain plugs, and vent plugs and valves
freely accessible?
• Are all input and output elements to be mounted ATEX ap-
proved?
• Is it certain that the data specified on the rating plate are not
exceeded for stand-alone gear units with adapters or input-side
covers?
• For installation of gear units with hollow shaft and shrink disk:
Is the cover mounted properly?
• For gear units with a motor adapter: Is it certain that the maxi-
mum torque of the gear unit cannot be overloaded by the motor
that is mounted? See rating plate for maximum torque.
• For mains-operated geared motors (observe the Ex protection
according to the separate motor rating plate): Do the data spec-
ified on the rating plate of the gear unit and motor conform to the
ambient conditions on site?
• For converter-operated geared motors (observe the Ex protec-
tion according to the separate motor rating plate): Is the geared
motor approved for converter operation? The parameterization of
the converter must prevent an overload of the gear unit (see rat-
ing plate on gear unit).
4.2
During commissioning
• Measure the surface temperature after about 3 hours. A differ-
ence of 70K from the ambient temperature may not be exceed-
ed. If the difference is greater than 70K, shut down drive unit im-
mediately and contact STÖBER Antriebstechnik.
5.
Inspection and maintenance
after 1000 machine hours:
• Visual inspection of seals for leaks
• for gear unit with torque bracket: inspect rubber buffer and re-
place, if necessary
after 5000 machine hours:
• change synthetic oil and roller bearing grease
• replace shaft seal ring
after 10000 machine hours:
• change synthetic oil and roller bearing grease
• replace shaft seal ring
• replace roller bearings
6.
Explosion protection for gear units
When used as intended and in compliance with the information
in the above sections of this operating manual and in compliance
with the corresponding additional information sheets for instal-
lation and commissioning, the gear unit series listed above can
be used in explosive areas within the scope of the following con-
ditions.
Depending on the order confirmation and rating plate spec-
ifications for gear units:
II2GD - classification corresponding to group II, category 2 gas
and dust.
II3GD - classification corresponding to group II, category 3 gas
and dust.
c/k T3 - design safety and liquid encapsulation within tempera-
ture class T3.
c/k T4 - design safety and liquid encapsulation within tempera-
ture class T4.
c/k 120°C - design safety and liquid encapsulation, max. surface
temperature 120 °C.
IMPORTANT! Max. speeds: Depending on the selected cate-
gory, different input speeds are permissible. See Information
Brochure ID 441677 and information on the order con-
firmation for sensor-monitored gear units.
For geared motors, observe the Ex protection according to
the separate motor rating plate.
