– Provide an uncluttered, anti-slip location with
adequate illumination.
– Prior to all work, make sure that the safety and
operating equipment is securely attached and
undamaged. Damaged protective equipment and
parts must be repaired correctly or replaced.
– The machine may only be used in stationary con-
figuration together with the bench stand 033110
(optional accessory).
– When using the machine on the bench stand the
retractable knife guard provided is to be fitted.
– When working short pieces of wood a feeding
stick has to be used.
– Before changing the knives and eliminating mal-
functions (including the removal of trapped chips)
pull out the mains plug.
– Do not carry the machine by the cable and do not
remove the mains plug from the socket by pulling
on the cable.
– Protect the cable against oil and high tempera-
tures and do not pull it over any sharp edges.
– Damaged cables or plugs must be renewed
immediately.
– Always be aware of environmental influences. Do
not allow the machine to be exposed to the rain
and do not use the machine in a damp or wet
environment, or in the vicinity of inflammable
liquids or gases.
– Examine the workpiece for foreign objects. Never
attempt to cut over nails or other metal objects.
– Before switching on check that the knives are
tightly clamped.
– Never work with pieces which are too big or too
small for the machine's capacity.
– Whenever possible, secure the workpiece against
slipping (e.g. with screw clamps).
– Hold the machine firmly even before switching on
– Do not begin cutting until the cutter head has
reached full speed.
– When cutting, always lead the cable away from
the machine to the rear.
– Always keep your hands well away from the
cutter head or the chip ejection area while the
machine is running.
– A uniform feedrate when cutting increases the
life of the knives and the machine and ensures
good planing results. Never cut backward or by
plunging the machine!
– After switching off do not set the machine aside
until the cutter head has come to a standstill or
switch cutting depth to 0.
– After rabbeting put back the rabbet depth stop to
its starting position (thereby the cutter head is
covered laterally).
– The knives must be reversed or replaced in good
time as blunt knives do not only increase the risk
of kickback, but also impose an unnecessary load
on the motor. The knives have to be clamped
correctly.
– The sawdust created by cutting makes it difficult
to see as clearly as necessary and can be dam-
aging to health in certain circumstances. If not
working outdoors or on well ventilated premises,
therefore, the machine must be connected to an
extractor unit, such as a small portable dust ex-
tractor, when operating for long periods. The air
velocity must be at least 20 m/s (65.6 ft/sec.).
– The sound pressure level at the workplace gene-
rally exceeds 85 dB (A). Users should therefore
wear ear protectors.
– When operating the machine outdoors, use of an
earth-leakage circuit-breaker is recommended.
– Store the machine in the dry under lock and key
and out of reach of children.
– Only original MAFELL spare parts and accesso-
ries must be used. Otherwise the manufacturer
does not offer any warranty and does not accept
any liability
– Regular cleaning of the machine is an important
safety factor. Before beginning this task, pull out
the mains plug.

Setting up / Adjusting

5.1 Mains connection

The portable electric plane MHU 82 has Class II
protective insulation (double-insulated).
Before starting up, make sure that the mains voltage
matches the voltage stated on the rating plate.

5.2 Dust extraction

When machining wood for a long period and when
using the machine industrially with materials that
generate dust which represents a health hazard,
the machine must be connected to a suitable dust
extractor unit.
