Caution
In the case of vehicles with a permissible noseweight of over
165 lbs (75 kg), ensure that the maximum load of approx. 127 lbs
(57.5 kg) on the rear-mounted bicycle rack for 2 bicycles and the
maximum load of approx. 119 lbs (53.8 kg) on the rear-mounted
bicycle rack for 3 bicycles is not exceeded.

Important safety notes

G
WARNING
Always observe the maximum permissible load of the rear-mounted
bicycle rack. Always observe the permissible gross vehicle weight and
the permissible noseweight; see the vehicle Owner's Manual. The
rear-mounted bicycle rack and/or the bicycles mounted to it may
otherwise come loose from your vehicle, thereby injuring you and
other persons and/or causing damage to property, including damage
to your vehicle.
G
WARNING
Rear loading presents a larger surface area exposed to the wind and
also raises the vehicle's centre of gravity, thus leading to a change in
driving characteristics. Therefore, when the rear-mounted bicycle
rack is mounted, do not exceed a maximum speed of 80 mph
(130 km/h).
The additional weight on the trailer coupling of the vehicle impairs
braking performance, cornering ability and the acceleration
characteristics of the vehicle. Always adapt your driving style to the
prevailing road, traffic and weather conditions and drive with
particular care if the rear-mounted bicycle rack is laden. There is a risk
of an accident.
Always drive with extra care with the rear-mounted bicycle rack
mounted, even if it is unladen.
G
WARNING
Do not cover the bicycles with a tarpaulin, protective cover or other
similar items as this will increase the surface area exposed to the
wind. This affects driving behaviour and rear visibility. The braking
performance, cornering ability and the acceleration characteristics of
the vehicle may be impaired. There is a risk of an accident.
G
WARNING
Every time your perform a fitting, before you set off on a journey and
periodically during long journeys, check all screws/locking
mechanisms, retainers and straps on the rear-mounted bicycle rack
to make sure that they are secure. Retighten them if necessary.
Replace defective or worn parts of the rear-mounted bicycle rack
immediately. The anchorages could come loose of their own accord,
and the rear-mounted bicycle rack with the mounted bicycles could
come loose from your vehicle, thereby injuring yourself and others
and/or causing damage to property, including damage to your
vehicle. Check that the light fitting is in perfect working order. Repeat
these checks at regular intervals depending on the road surface
conditions, but at least after every 1,550 miles (2,500 km) of
continuous use. There is a risk of an accident.
Caution
The boot lid/tailgate/rear doors swing/swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. For this reason, ensure that the rear-mounted
bicycle rack is pulled out before opening.Depending on the model
series, collisions may occur when the tailgate/rear doors are
opened even if the bicycle rack is pulled out. Do not use the tailgate
remote control in this case (use the door control panel or vehicle
key instead).Remove the rear-mounted bicycle rack to gain
unrestricted access to the luggage compartment.
Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS: When working on the
rear-mounted bicyle rack behind the vehicle, do not carry a KEYLESS-GO
key with you. Otherwise, you may unintentionally open or close the boot
lid/tailgate.
If difficulties arise during fitting, contact a qualified specialist workshop.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use a Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.
Take note of how the vehicle dimensions change once the rear-mounted
bicycle rack is mounted. When manoeuvring, ensure that there are no
persons, animals or objects in the manoeuvring area.
The rear-mounted bicycle rack is not suitable for off-road use.
If the rear-mounted bicycle rack is not fully loaded, it must be ensured that:
fasteners that are not needed are locked.
all keys are pulled out and stored.
the tensions straps of all wheel holders are closed.
Store heavy loads in the boot/load compartment as far front as possible
to prevent excessive load at the rear.
When driving at night, cover the reflectors of the bicycles. You thus avoid
creating a distorted view of your rear vehicle lighting which could disrupt
or confuse other road users.
Observe legal requirements regarding the third brake light: In the case of
vehicle designs that received their type approval after 01/10/1998, load
carriers or loads being transported may not cover the third brake light of
the vehicle. The third brake light must be visible on the right and left –
from the longitudinal axis of the vehicle – within a horizontal angle of 10°,
upwards – from the top edge of the light – within a vertical angle of 10°
and downwards – from the lower edge of the light – within a vertical angle
of 5°. If only one of these visibility requirements cannot be fulfilled, an
additional third brake light must be fitted.
If the load extends more than 16 inch (40 cm) beyond the outermost edge
of the lighting system of the rear-mounted bicycle rack, it must be
marked. Observe the legal requirements of the country in which you are
using or intend to use the rear-mounted bicycle rack on the road.
Note that when the rear-mounted bicycle rack is mounted, convenience
and safety systems of your vehicle, e. g. parking systems, may be
deactivated. Further information can be found in the vehicle Owner's
Manual.
For safety reasons and in order to save fuel, the rear-mounted bicycle
rack should be removed from the vehicle when not in use.
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recommends only using replacement
parts/accessories approved for use with this rear-mounted bicycle rack.
