INSTRUCTION MANUAL
Dear Customer,
Thank you for choosing Team Orion's Vortex brushless combo. This combo fea-
tures the latest developments in R/C car brushless electronic speed controller
technology.
The Vortex Mini Inferno brushless sensorless combo has been specifically devel-
oped for the Kyosho Mini Inferno. It has forward and reverse capability and can
be powered with NiCd, NiMh, LiFe or LiPo batteries. A special low voltage cut-off
function prevents possible damage to the battery and/or loss of control. Several
advanced parameters can be tuned to better fit your requirements.
Please read these instructions carefully to ensure that you receive maximum per-
formance and reliability.
ESC INSTALLATION
It is important that the ESC is securely attached to the chassis and that there is a
good airflow around it. We recommend cutting out air vents on the front and rear
windows of the bodyshell.
Install the ESC at the same location as the original ESC is located.
• Find a convenient location for the switch and use double sided tape to attach
it to the chassis.
• Attach the power capacitor so it cannot move
• Connect the ESC receiver wire to the receiver (refer to your transmitter
instructions if needed).
• Connect the three connectors from the ESC to the motor.
Warning ! use short gearing and appropriate settings
when running a 3S battery!
MOTOR INSTALLATION
The motor is fitted using the original hardware.
• Install the motor so that you can easily connect it to the ESC.
• Secure the motor to the motor mount using the screws supplied with your
car.
• Before installing the pinion, make sure that the final gear ratio is suitable for
the motor.
• Optional clip-on cooling fins are available (ORI65033)
GEARING
You must use correct gearing for the system to function properly. Refer to your
car manual if you need information about gear ratios. Using the wrong gear ratio
can cause malfunctions and damage the ESC or motor!
We recommend using the 12T pinion with the ORI28181 Super Speed motor and
the 14T pinion with the ORI28180 Speed motor.
ESC SETUP
The ESC is equipped with a setup button and three LED of different colors to help
you setup the various parameters and indicate the ESC status.
ESC calibration
Before you can use it, the ESC needs to be setup to match your transmitter's
inputs. Make sure that your transmitter's trims are centered, that the throttle and
brake are set at 100% travel and the throttle exponential is at 0%.
Note: If the ESC does not respond to the transmitters inputs during setup,
try to use the throttle reverse function of your transmitter.
Switch transmitter on, press and hold the setup button on the ESC. Switch on
the ESC, after 3 seconds; the green LED will light solid, release the button. The
ESC is in setup mode.
Neutral point setting:
Place the transmitter's throttle on neutral and press the setup button once. The
green LED will blink one time repeatedly.
Full throttle setting:
Place the transmitter's throttle on full throttle and press the setup button once.
The green LED will blink twice repeatedly.
Full brake setting:
Place the transmitter's throttle on full brake and press the setup button once. The
green LED will blink three times repeatedly.
After a short time the LED returns to solid green. Turn the ESC off and then on
again to complete the setup procedure. The ESC is now calibrated to your trans-
mitter and is functional.

Normal operation mode
The LEDs indicate the actual operation mode of the controller and also eventual
problems occurring. Please note that to avoid power surges that could damage
the ESC's internals, the controller marks a small pause when switching from for-
ward to reverse or reverse to forward.

Advanced setup
With the ESC switched on and in normal operation mode, press and hold the setup
button 3 seconds. The ESC enters the advanced setup mode.
The colors of the LED that are lit indicate the parameter that is actually selected
(see diagrams below). Keep holding the setup button to cycle through the various
available parameters (7 in total). When the LED colors refer to the parameter you
wish to adjust, release the setup button. The same LED will then flash indicating
the value that is actually set for the selected parameter (1 to 9 flashes depend-
ing on the parameter).
To modify a parameter's value, briefly press the setup button and the value will
be increased by one step (in a loop). To validate the modification, press the setup
button for 3 seconds. The values will be set and the ESC will return to the nor-
mal operation mode.
If the setup button is not pressed after modifying the parameter value, the modi-
fication will not be saved and the ESC will return to normal operation mode after
10 seconds. The ESC will also return to normal operation mode after 10 seconds
of inactivity in advanced setup mode.
Always restart the ESC after modifying a parameter value and saving the
modification. This ensures that the ESC validates the change.
Only one parameter can be adjusted at a time.
To adjust another parameter, restart the procedure to re-enter advanced setup
mode.
The optional programming box ORI65020 allows for a faster and more convenient
modification of the parameters.
Default settings
1. Battery: LiPo auto detect
2. Drive power profile: linear
3. Brake: 60%
4. Drag Brake: 0%
5. Timing: 0 deg.
6. Neutral dead band: 2
7 . Operation mode: Forward and Reverse
Adjustable parameters
Warning! Use of inappropriate or extreme settings
can damage the motor and/or ESC.
Mode 1: Battery type
Use this parameter to select the battery type used to power the car. The safety
cut-off voltage system, informs the user of low battery voltage, by briefly inter-
rupting the power output to the motor. To prevent eventual battery damage (3V/
cell for LiPo batteries and 4.0V for NiMH/NiCd batteries), stop running the car as
soon as you feel this drop in power. It is also possible to turn off the low volt-
age cut off system, in this case the ESC will run as long as the battery is supply-
ing enough power for the ESC to function. Be aware that over-discharging certain
types of batteries can damage them.
Mode 2: Drive power profile
This parameter determines the power curve of the acceleration. You can use a
lower value for rough or slippery surfaces and a higher value for smooth and high-
grip surfaces.
