Work area safety

Keep people and animals well away from the working
area.
Do not use the machine in bad weather, such as dense
fog, heavy rain, strong wind, intense cold, etc.
Only use the machine in daylight or in other well-lit con-
ditions.
Remove obstacles such as stones, branches, etc.
Make sure you can move and stand safely. Check the
area around you for possible obstacles (roots, rocks,
branches, ditches, etc.) in case you have to move sud-
denly. Take great care when working on sloping ground.
On sloping ground you should work along the slope. It is
much easier to work along a slope than it is to work up
and down it.
Use and care
Check that all handles and controls are undamaged and
free of oil.
Check that the machine is in perfect working order. Check
that all nuts and screws are tight.
Check the cutting attachment. Never use blunt, cracked
or damaged equipment. A faulty cutting attachment may
increase the risk of accidents.
Never leave the machine unsupervised with the motor
running.
The engine must be switched off before moving.
Warning: rotating cutter. Keep hands and feet clear.
The muffl er gets very hot in use and remains so for a short
time afterwards. Do not touch the muffl er if it is hot! Never
use a machine that has a faulty muffl er.
Never twist the starter cord around your hand.
Do not stop the engine using the choke control.
The brake handle must never be permanently anchored in
handle when the machine is running.
If any foreign object is hit or if vibrations occur stop the
machine immediately. Disconnect the HT lead from the
spark plug. Check that the machine is not damaged.
Repair any damage.
Never run with the machine when it is running.
Pay particular attention when pulling the machine towards
you during work.
Switch off the engine and take off the ignition cable before
repairs or maintenance (S400B)
Inspection and/or maintenance should be carried out
with the motor switched off and the plug disconnected.
(S400E)
Never make adjustments with the engine running.
Always wear heavy-duty gloves when servicing and main-
taining the cutting equipment. The cutters are very sharp
and cuts can occur very easily.
Fuel safety (S400B)
Never run the engine indoors, in enclosed or poorly
ventilated areas. The exhaust fumes contain toxic carbon
monoxide. Always ensure there is adequate ventilation
when handling fuel. Long-term inhalation of the engine's
exhaust fumes can represent a health hazard.
The exhaust fumes from the engine are hot and may con-
tain sparks which can start a fi re. Never start the machine
indoors or near combustible material! Do not smoke or
place hot objects near fuel.
Only store fuel in containers approved for the purpose.
Never start the machine:
If you have spilt fuel or engine oil on the machine. Wipe off
the spill and allow the remaining fuel to evaporate.
If you spill fuel or engine oil on yourself or your clothes.
Change your clothes.
If the machine is leaking fuel. Check regularly for leaks
from the fuel cap and fuel lines.
Fuelling
Use high-grade unleaded petrol of at least 85 octane.
Leaded petrol can be used if unleaded petrol is not avai-
lable. Petrol is a perishable product. Do not buy a larger
amount of petrol than can be used within 30 days.
Always shut off the engine before refuelling. Always remo-
ve the ignition lead from the spark plug before refuelling.
Allow the engine to cool before refuelling.
Clean around the fuel cap. When refuelling, open the fuel
cap slowly so that any excess pressure is released gently.
Do not fi ll too much petrol. Leave about 35 mm under the
fi ller cap so that the fuel can expand.
Tighten the fuel cap carefully after refuelling.
Always move the machine away from the refuelling area
before starting.
Engine oil Engine oil
The engine is delivered without oil. Fill with engine oil to
the correct level. Refer to Technical Data for recommenda-
tions on which oil type to use.
For the best result and function use HUSQVARNA engine
oil. When HUSQVARNA engine oil is not available another
high grade engine oil can be used. Contact your dealer
when selecting oil. In general SAE 30 is recommended.
Check the oil level before starting the machine. A too low
oil level can cause serious damage to the engine.
Oil level
The machine should stand on fl at ground when you check
the oil level. Ensure the ignition lead has been removed
from the spark plug before you open the oil fi ller cap.
Check oil level and top up if necessary. Only use recom-
mended engine oil. See the Technical data section.

Transport and storage

If the machine is not used for some time the fuel tank
should be emptied and cleaned.
Store and transport the machine and fuel so that there
is no risk of any leakage or fumes coming into contact
with sparks or naked fl ames, for example, from electrical
machinery, electric motors, electrical relays/switches or
boilers.
When storing and transporting fuel always use approved
containers intended for this purpose.
The machine should always be stored in a dry place when
not in use.
Electrical safety (S400E)
There is always a risk of shocks from electrically powered
machines. Avoid unfavourable weather conditions and
body contact with lightning conductors and metal objects.
Always follow the instructions in the Operator's manual to
avoid damage.
Never drag the machine by means of the cord and never
pull out the plug by pulling the cord.
Keep all cables away of water, oil and sharp edges. Make
sure the cable is not pinched in doors, fences or the like. It
can cause the object to become live.
Check that the cables are intact and in good condition.
Use cable intended for outdoor use.
Ensure the cord is behind you when you start to use the
