The Tread 1 Steampunk is a very unique watch
having a large variety of materials not commonly
seen on wristwatches. The exterior bronze and
copper alloys provide the watch with an outstanding
appearance that will continue to change over time.
These alloys develop a protective oxide coating
commonly called a "Patina". As the watch ages
the patina grows stronger resulting in darker color
tones and a classic, aged look. This patina varies
depending on use and environmental conditions
and each watch will develop its own unique
appearance. The patina process is accelerated
by exposure to the elements and thus storing the
watch in a clean, dry location may also slow this
process.
The bronze alloy used on Steampunk uses aluminum
as the main alloying metal added to copper. Aluminum
bronzes are most valued for their higher strength and
corrosion resistance as compared to other bronze
alloys. These alloys are tarnish-resistant and show
low rates of corrosion in atmospheric conditions.
Aluminum bronzes are most commonly used in
applications where their resistance to corrosion
makes them preferable to other engineering materials,
such as landing gear components on aircraft,
engine components (especially for seagoing ships),
underwater fastenings in naval architecture, and ship
propellers. The attractive gold-toned coloration of
aluminum bronze also made it the perfect choice for
the Tread 1 Steampunk.
