1. Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of the MQPerfect MQ098 blood pressure monitor. This unit
uses a new oscillometric method to provide rapid measurement of systolic and diastolic pressure
as well as pulse rate.
This unit has hospital-grade accuracy, and has a jumbo LCD display to clearly show the operating
status of cuff pressure and pumping pressure. These unique features allow for easy recognition
of pressure changes during measurement.
Before using this unit, be sure to read all the instructions very carefully. Please contact your
physician or your pharmacist if you have any questions.

2. Background information on blood pressure

A. What is blood pressure?
Your arteries and veins have a special smooth muscle that can contract or relax.
This smooth muscle adjusts the distribution of blood to meet the constantly changing needs of
different parts of the body and to maintain a normal blood pressure. These partial constrictions of
smooth muscle offer a resistance in the passage of blood from the arteries to veins. Your pressure
will be the highest when the heart contracts (systolic blood pressure), and lowest when the heart
is relaxing (diastolic blood pressure).
B. What values are normal?
Blood pressure readings are regarded as an important index of health. Although blood pressure
varies in accordance with the beating of the heart, a typical normal blood pressure would be around
120 mmHg for systolic pressure and 80 mmHg for diastolic pressure. In their 1999 report, "1999
Guidelines for Management of Hypertention", the World Health Organization (WHO) established a
standard to classify the blood pressure, as shown in Fig. 1. [a] & [b] on next page. It is recommended
that high blood pressure or, "hypertension" be diagnosed only when a higher than normal level has
been found on several physician visits. Either the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) or the systolic
blood pressure (SBP) may be considered high.
