5. Troubleshooting
If you are encountering problems, it is worth trying the following:
5.1. No sound is heard when playing back one of the demo songs
If you don't hear any sound when playing back the demo songs, the most likely reason for
this is that you don't have the right MIDI output device selected for Sound Studio to use.
1.
Open the Devices dialogue box (found on Sound Studio's Options menu), and trying
each of the listed Output devices individually in turn. The most likely candidate will be
a device containing the word Synth in its description, although the exact devices names
vary from sound card to sound card.
2.
If none of the devices will playback, it is worth verifying that you can hear music when
using the Windows Media Player to playback MIDI files, as failure here would indicate
a system-wide problem with your sound card, which may require reinstallation of the
sound card drivers. Your sound card supplier will assist with this.
5.2. Sound is not heard when the external keyboard is played, but is heard when playing one of
the demo songs or the on-screen keyboard
If you can hear the demo songs when they are played, and can hear notes played from the
on-screen keyboard but cannot hear anything when playing from the external keyboard,
there are a number of checks to be made.
1.
Make sure that the keyboard is properly connected to your PC sound card's Joystick or
Game port using the supplied 5pin DIN to 15pin D-connector cable and switched on. It
is also worth making sure that you have an input device selected in the Sound Studio's
Devices dialogue box (found on the Options menu), and listed as either an MPU-401
input or a MIDI input.
2.
If the problem persists, it is worth uninstalling your sound card's MIDI device drivers
and reinstalling the latest versions (which should be available from the sound card
manufacturers, often for immediate download from the manufacturer's internet
website) – improperly installed MIDI drivers are the most common reason for
communication problems between PCs and MIDI keyboards.
5.3. A warning is given or an error occurs when an attempt is made to play a demo song which
contains Audio Patterns
If the MIDI-only demo songs play back fine, but there are problems with the playback of
songs containing Audio Patterns, the most common explanation for this is that you have a
softsynth enabled on your PC and using your sound card's Audio capabilities, which should
be deselected or disabled. Softsynths often have a significant delay in playing a selected
keyboard note.
1.
You can rectify this by opening the Devices dialogue box (found on Sound Studio's
Options menu), and trying each of the listed Output devices individually in turn. The
most likely candidate will be a device containing the word Synth in its description,
although the exact devices names vary from sound card to sound card.
