ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC DEVICES INFORMATION FOR PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDS
The German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (German: ElektroG) contains a variety of requirements for handling
with electrical and electronic devices. The following is a summary of the most important.
1. Waste separation for old devices
Electrical/electronic devices that have become waste are referred to as old devices.
Owners of old devices are legally required to separate them from unsorted municipal solid waste. Old devices do not
belong in household waste but must be returned to special collection or return systems.
2. Batteries and rechargeable batteries
Owners of old devices must separate old (rechargeable) batteries not integrated into the device before disposal. This does
not apply to old devices returned to public recycling centers which are separated there in preparation of the recycling of
other old devices.
3. Ways to return old devices
Owners of old devices from private households may return old devices to public collection points or return centers es-
tablished by the manufacturer or retailer in keeping with applicable regulations. A list of collection and return points in

4. Notes on data protection
Old devices often contain sensitive personal data. This is especially true of information and telecommunications devices
as well as computers and smartphones. In your own interest, please note that as the end user you are responsible for
deleting all data on old devices you dispose of.
5. Meaning of the symbol with the crossed-out waste bin
The symbol of the crossed-out wheeled waste bin on electrical/electronic devices indicates that the device in
question must be disposed of separately from unsorted municipal solid waste.
