OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Analogue/Digital Oscilloscope „650 A/D"
Item no. 12 18 01

Prescribed use

The analogue/digital oscilloscope is for the visual representation of electrical quantities and
signals. There are two independent input channels available for the measurement. The probes
are connected to the oscilloscope via BNC connectors.
The oscilloscope works as a conventional analogue oscilloscope with a bandwidth of 50 MHz
and can be switched to the digital storage mode with a sampling rate of 100/500 MS/s by
pressing a button.
The measured signals can be stored and displayed on the screen as a reference for the other
measuring channel.
Various parameters can be displayed alphanumerically on the screen.
10 user-defined device settings can be stored for an easy start-up.
A serial interface (RS232) is provided for connection to a workstation.
The measuring voltages indicated on the device must never be exceeded. Use divider probes
if necessary.
Only connect the oscilloscope to a safety outlet of the public power supply system.
Any use other than the one described above will damage the product. Moreover, this involves
dangers such as short-circuits, fire, electric shock, etc.
No part of the product must be modified or rebuilt and the housing must not be opened.
No measuring in damp rooms or outdoors, nor under adverse environmental conditions!
Adverse environmental conditions are:
- Wetness or high air humidity
- Dust and flammable gases, vapours or solvents
- Thunderstorms or similar conditions such as strong electrostatic fields etc.
Always observe the safety notes included in these operating instructions.
This quick guide explains safety measures to make working with the device as safe as
possible. The individual functions of the device are described in more detail in the enclosed
operating manual.

Safety instructions and danger warnings

To ensure proper operation, please read these operating instructions
completely before you use the product.
• In the case of any damages which are caused due to the failure to observe these operating
instructions, the guarantee will expire! We do not assume any liability for resulting
damages!
• Nor do we assume liability for damage to property or personal injury, caused by improper
use or the failure to observe the safety instructions! The guarantee will expire in any such
case.
• The device is CE-conform and complies with the required European directives.
• The unauthorized conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible because of
safety and approval reasons (CE).
• The design of the product complies with safety class I. As a voltage source only a proper,
earthed power socket (230V~/50Hz) of the public power supply system may be used.
• Measuring devices and devices connected to the power supply should be kept out of reach
of children. Be especially careful when children are around.
• First connect the BNC output of the probe to the oscilloscope before you connect the probe
with the electrical circuit to be tested. The measuring completed, please disconnect the
measuring contacts first before disconnecting the BNC output of the probe from the
oscilloscope.
• Be especially careful when dealing with voltages higher than 25V AC or 35 V DC. Even at
such voltages you can get a life-threatening electric shock when you get in contact with
electric wires.
• Check the measuring device and its measuring lines for any damage(s) before each
measurement. Never carry out any measurements if the protecting insulation is defect (torn,
ripped off, etc.)
• To avoid an electric shock, make sure not to touch the connections/measuring points to be
measured neither directly nor indirectly during measurement.
• Never reach beyond the grip surface of the probes during a measurement process. There
is danger of a life-threatening electric shock.
• Do not use the device shortly before or after a thunderstorm (lightning! / high-energy
overvoltages!). Make sure that your hands, shoes, clothing, the floor, the measuring device
and/or measuring lines, the circuits and also parts of it are always dry.
• Do not operate the measuring device in rooms or under adverse environmental conditions,
ww w.voltcraft. de
where inflammable gases, vapours or dust are or could be present.
• Avoid operation near strong magnetic or electromagnetic fields, transmitter aerials or HF
generators
Version 01/07
since this could affect the measurement.
• Only use measurement lines and accessories for the measurement that match the
specifications of the oscilloscope.
• If there is any reason to believe that safe operation has become impossible, put the device
out of operation and secure it against any unintended operation. Safe operation must be
presumed to be no longer possible if:
- the device shows visible damages,
- the device does not operate any longer and
- the unit was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time or
- the unit was exposed to extraordinary stress caused by transport.
• Never switch on the device immediately after it has been brought from a cold room into a
warm one. Condensation water that forms might destroy your device. Leave the device
switched off and wait until it has reached room temperature.
• Never disassemble the product! This could cause a life-threatening electric shock!
• Do not leave packaging material unattended. It may become a dangerous toy for children!
• The device is only for dry interior rooms (no bathrooms or similar damp rooms). Make sure
the device does not get damp or wet. This could cause a life-threatening electric shock!
• In industrial facilities, the safety regulations laid down by the professional trade association
for electrical equipment and facilities must be adhered to.
• Consult an expert when in doubt about the mode of operation, safety or connection of the
device.
• Please handle the product carefully. Knocks, impacts or even a fall from a low height can
damage the product.
• Please also note the enclosed detailed operating instructions.
This product left the manufacturer's factory in safe and perfect condition.
We kindly request the user to observe the safety instructions and warnings contained
in the enclosed operating instructions to preserve this condition and to ensure safe
operation. Please observe the following symbols:
CAT II
An exclamation mark in a triangle indicates important notes in this operating
manual which have to be observed.
A flash symbol in a triangle warns against an electric shock or impairment of the
electrical safety of the device.
The "hand" icon gives you tips and notes on the operation.
The device is CE-conform and complies with the required European directives.
Warning! This is a class A device. It can cause radio interferences in the living
area; in this case, it can be demanded from the operator that he carries out
appropriate measures.
Overvoltage category II for measurements on electric devices connected to the
mains supply with a power plug.
Protective conductor, safety class I
Earth potential
Reference earth chassis
Regularly check the technical safety of the device and the measuring lines,
e.g. for damage of the housing or squashing, etc.
Never operate the device when it is open!
DANGER TO LIFE!
Never exceed the maximum admissible input values.
Do not touch any circuits or parts of circuits if they can have higher
voltages than 25 V Acrms or 35 V DC. Danger to life!
