Effect of radon on the organism

Radon is an invisible gas that is formed inside earth crust and escapes naturally into the
air. For example, it can reach through different rock layers inside buildings by cracks in
floor slabs, as well as by pipes and windows in buildings. Permanently high concentrations
in the breathing air may be e.g. carcinogenic due to its radioactive decay products by alpha
radiation. Due to the low half-life of 3.82 days, radon components usually evaporate quickly
and effectively through proper ventilation.
Radon content in
the room air
0–49 Bq/m³
49–99 Bq/m³
100–299 Bq/m³
300 Bq/m³ and higher

Emergency measures in case of gas leakage

Always observe your own safety.
Hold your breath.
A cloth held in front of the mouth and nose does not protect and does not filter toxic
gases.
Extinguish open flames including smokers.
Breathe fresh air, eg. at the window.
Provide fresh air by opening windows and doors.
Thus, the concentration of gas in the air is rapidly reduced.
Turn off all gas sources.
Rescue victims with symptoms of intoxication in the fresh air.
Do not turn on or off electrical appliances, including telephones, doorbells and
the Radon detector.
Close the main gas stopcock.
With LPG this is usually directly at the gas tank.
Depending on the situation, call the gas supplier or the fire brigade: 112

Possible actions
No action required.
Try lowering the radon values by venting and sealing cracks.
If these values persist for more than 3 months, contact a specia-
list for reducing the radon concentration.
If the values persist for more than 1 month, contact a specialist
for reducing the radon concentration.
