Select the modem just installed as 'Device'.
Enter the local telephone network's dialling code and possibly the exchange's
dialling code (mostly '0' for telephone systems). Monitor the activated 'MFV' mode.
Click on 'Close' and enter your provider's telephone number.
Click on 'Continue'. Use the right-hand mouse key to click on the long distance,
data-transfer network which has now been provided and then select 'Properties'.
Only 'TCP/IP' must be activated under normal circumstances; not 'Netbios'* or
'IPX/SPX'. There should be NO tick for 'register with the network' option, because
the registration procedure would otherwise take longer to complete.
Finally, you should correctly set the 'TCP/IP -> long distance, data-transfer adapter'
characteristics for the network environment, e.g., the DNS server, if this is required
by your provider (unnecessary for many Call by Call suppliers).
An appropriate installation icon should be displayed on the screen, in the event that
your Internet Explorer is not installed yet. Double click on it and follow all of the
instructions.
Your provider (supplier of the Internet access) must give the
appropriate information for the installation. This information can
mostly be found on the provider's website too; which is naturally
of no help to you at the moment, if the Internet connection has
not been made. Perhaps someone you know who has Internet
access can provide it.
There are now sufficient free providers available too, who do not require any registra-
tion of access software at all and whose prices per minute are sometimes just as
economical or even cheaper than those of the major providers such as T-Online or
AOL.
Such a provider with 'Call by Call' billing can be advantageous if you do not yet want
to commit yourself to a particular supplier. Apart from that, you can just use the most
economical Internet access according to the time of day.
You should therefore certainly bear in mind, that many other per-
sons also select the cheapest provider for Internet access; so
that it is sometimes impossible to make a connection. This situa-
tion does not depend on the modem. Just choose another Call by
Call provider, e.g., one with a somewhat higher price per minute.
