Bestimmungsgemäße Verwendung
Mit dem Produkt kann ein IDE-Gerät (z.B. eine IDE-Festplatte) an einer USB-Schnittstelle eines Computers
betrieben werden.
Alle enthaltenen Firmennamen und Produktbezeichnungen sind Warenzeichen der jeweiligen
Inhaber. Alle Rechte vorbehalten.

Aus Sicherheits- und Zulassungsgründen (CE) ist das eigenmächtige Umbauen und/oder
Verändern des Produkts nicht gestattet.
Der Aufbau des Steckernetzteils entspricht der Schutzklasse 2. Als Spannungsquelle für das
Steckernetzteil darf nur eine ordnungsgemäße Netzsteckdose (230V~/50Hz) des öffentli-
chen Versorgungsnetzes verwendet werden.
Das Produkt ist kein Spielzeug. Geräte, die an Netzspannung betrieben werden, gehören
nicht in Kinderhände. Lassen Sie deshalb in Anwesenheit von Kindern besondere Vorsicht
walten.
Lassen Sie das Verpackungsmaterial nicht achtlos liegen, dieses könnte für Kinder zu einem
gefährlichen Spielzeug werden.
Das Produkt ist nur für trockene Innenräume vorgesehen, es darf nicht feucht oder nass
werden! Es besteht die Gefahr eines lebensgefährlichen elektrischen Schlages!
Gehen Sie vorsichtig mit dem Produkt um, durch Stöße, Schläge oder dem Fall aus bereits
geringer Höhe wird es beschädigt.
Vorbereitungen & Zusammenbau
• Das IDE-Gerät ist auf „MASTER" (MA) einzustellen. Dazu ist eine Steckbrücke auf dem IDE-Gerät
entsprechend einzustellen. Beachten Sie die Bedienungsanleitung zum IDE-Gerät oder evtl. Aufkleber
auf dem IDE-Gerät. Auch im Internet finden Sie bei den jeweiligen Herstellern entsprechende Informa-
tionen. Bei der Einstellung „SLAVE" (SL) oder „CABLE-SELECT" (CS) wird das IDE-Gerät nicht
erkannt!
• Anschließend können Sie den IDE-USB-Konverter auf das IDE-Gerät aufstecken.
Achten Sie dabei darauf, dass die Buchsenleiste des Konverters genau auf die 40 Stifte des
IDE-Anschlusses des IDE-Geräts gesteckt wird. Die Buchsenleiste des Konverters ist evtl.
etwas schmaler als die Steckerleiste auf dem IDE-Gerät, setzen Sie den Konverter korrekt
auf!
• Bringen Sie den Ein-/Ausschalter auf dem Spannungswandler in die Stellung „OFF" (Aus). Verbinden Sie
den Stromanschluss auf dem Konverter und auf dem IDE-Gerät mit den entsprechenden Anschlüssen
des mitgelieferten Spannungswandlers. Wenden Sie keine Gewalt an.
• Der Konverter bietet einen Anschluss für eine LED, die Schreib-/Lese-Zugriffe auf die angeschlossene
Festplatte anzeigen kann. Falls Sie den Anschluss nutzen wollen ,so achten Sie auf polungsrichtigen
Anschluss der LED (+/Plus und -/Minus). Beachten Sie den Aufdruck auf dem Konverter. Falls die LED
später bei Schreib-/Lesezugriffen nicht aufleuchtet, so ziehen Sie den LED-Stecker aus dem Konverter
heraus und stecken ihn um 180° gedreht wieder ein.
• Verbinden Sie die Niederspannungsbuchse auf dem Spannungswandler mit dem Niederspannungs-
stecker des mitgelieferten Steckernetzteils. Anschließend ist das Steckernetzteil in eine ordnungsgemä-
ße Netzsteckdose (230V~/50Hz) zu stecken.
Treiber-Installation
• Bei Windows 98/98SE ist zuerst der mitgelieferte Treiber auf der CD zu installieren. Danach ist u.U. ein
Neustart erforderlich.
• Bei Windows ME oder XP ist der benötigte Treiber bereits im Betriebssystem integriert. Die mitgelieferte
CD ist nicht erforderlich!
Anschluss an den Computer
• Nach dem Einschalten des Computers warten Sie, bis das Betriebssystem vollständig geladen ist.
• Verbinden Sie die USB-Buchse auf dem Konverter über ein USB-Kabel mit einem freien USB2.0-Port
Ihres Computers.
• Bringen Sie den Schalter auf dem Spannungswandler in die Position „ON" (= Ein). Windows erkennt neue
Hardware und schließt danach die Treiberinstallation ab.
• Wenn Sie ein CD- oder DVD-Laufwerk mit dem Konverter betreiben, so erscheint dieses nun im Datei-
Explorer von Windows als neues Laufwerk.
• Eine Festplatte dagegen muss erst partitioniert und formatiert werden, bevor sie als Datenspeicher
verwendet werden kann.
Zum Partitionieren und Formatieren von Festplatten, die über USB angeschlossen werden, ist bei
Windows XP die Computerverwaltung zu verwenden. Sie finden diese in der Systemsteuerung von
Windows (Start > Einstellungen > Systemsteuerung > Verwaltung > Computerverwaltung > Datenspei-
cher > Datenträgerverwaltung).
Bei Windows 98 bzw. ME sind die MSDOS-Befehle „FDISK" und „FORMAT" zum Partitionieren bzw.
Formatieren zu verwenden, die in einem MS-DOS-Fenster eingegeben werden können. Formatieren Sie
aber nicht bereits vorhandene Partitionen auf Ihrer Systemfestplatte!
Handhabung
Der Betrieb ist nur in trockenen Innenräumen zulässig.
Verwenden Sie das Produkt niemals gleich dann, wenn es von einem kalten in einen warmen Raum gebracht
wird. Das dabei entstehende Kondenswasser kann unter Umständen das Produkt zerstören.
Lassen Sie das Produkt zuerst auf Zimmertemperatur kommen, bevor Sie es verwenden. Dies kann
u.U. mehrere Stunden dauern.
Achten Sie darauf, dass die Isolierung des gesamten Produkts weder beschädigt noch zerstört wird. Das
Steckernetzteil darf nicht geöffnet werden! Eine Wartung oder Reparatur darf nur duch eine Fachwerkstatt
durchgeführt werden.
Überprüfen Sie vor jedem Gebrauch das Produkt auf Beschädigungen!
Falls Sie Beschädigungen feststellen, so darf das Produkt NICHT an die Netzspan-
nung angeschlossen werden! Es besteht Lebensgefahr!
Es ist anzunehmen, dass ein gefahrloser Betrieb nicht mehr möglich ist, wenn
- das Gerät sichtbare Beschädigungen aufweist,
- das Gerät nicht mehr funktioniert und
- nach längerer Lagerung unter ungünstigen Verhältnissen oder
- nach schweren Transportbeanspruchungen.
Wenn das Produkt längere Zeit nicht in Betrieb genommen wird, so ziehen Sie das Steckernetzteil aus der
Netzsteckdose.
Vermeiden Sie folgende widrige Umgebungsbedingungen am Aufstellungsort oder beim Transport:
- Nässe oder zu hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit
- Extreme Kälte oder Hitze
- Staub oder brennbare Gase, Dämpfe oder Lösungsmittel
- starke Vibrationen
- starke Magnetfelder, wie in der Nähe von Maschinen oder Lautsprechern
Achten Sie beim Aufstellen des Produkts darauf, dass die Kabel nicht geknickt oder gequetscht werden.
Tipps und Hinweise
• Es ist belanglos, welchen der USB-Ports des Computers Sie benutzen, da alle Anschlüsse gleichberech-
tigt sind. Wenn Sie öfters USB-Geräte an- und abstecken, so sollten Sie darauf achten, dass das Gerät
immer an den gleichen USB-Port angesteckt wird. Ansonsten ist manchmal eine erneute Treiber-
installation erforderlich.
• Sie können Konverter und IDE-Gerät selbstverständlich auch an einem USB1.1-Port betreiben (z.B. wenn
kein USB2.0-Port vorhanden ist). Dann ist aber auch nur die USB1.1-Geschwindigkeit bei der Datenüber-
tragung erreichbar (effektiv max. ca. 1MByte/s).
• Für USB2.0-Betrieb sind keine speziellen „USB2.0-Kabel" erforderlich. Herkömmliche USB-Kabel reichen
vollig aus, allerdings müssen diese abgeschirmt sein. Sollten Sie beim Betrieb von USB2.0-Geräten
Übertragungsprobleme feststellen, so können Sie versuchsweise ein USB-Kabel verwenden, das auf
USB2.0-Betrieb getestet worden ist („USB2.0-certified") oder ein kürzeres USB-Kabel.
• Im abgesicherten Modus von Windows ist kein USB-Betrieb möglich.
• Für große IDE-Festplatten (>137GByte) ist ein dazu geeignetes Betriebssystem zu verwenden (z.B.
Windows XP mit Service-Pack 2). Ältere Betriebssysteme sind nicht in der Lage, problemlos mit so
großen Festplatten zusammenzuarbeiten. Falls z.B. mehr als 137GByte auf eine 200GByte-Festplatte
kopiert werden, so kann es zu einem kompletten Datenverlust kommen. Bei Überschreiten der 137GByte
werden weitere Daten wieder am Beginn der Festplatte geschrieben.
Windows 9x/ME ist normalerweise nicht in der Lage, mit so großen Festplatten umzugehen. Auch das
Partitionieren in kleinere Teile bringt keine Abhilfe!
• USB2.0-Geräte erlauben das Ein- und Ausstecken während dem Betrieb. Sie brauchen also nicht Ihren
Computer ausschalten, wenn Sie Geräte ein- oder ausstecken wollen (bei anderen Schnittstellen kann
dies zu Beschädigungen führen, z.B. wenn Sie eine PS/2-Maus während dem Betrieb ein- oder
ausstecken).
Finden jedoch Datenübertragungen auf dem USB-Port statt und Sie ziehen den USB-Stecker heraus,
so kann es zu Datenverlust kommen, was u.U. ein Neuformatieren der Festplatte nötig macht.
• Bei manchen USB-Geräten (z.B. externe Festplatten) erscheint ein Icon mit einem Pfeil in der Menüleiste.
Über diese Funktion können Sie das USB-Gerät vom Computer „trennen", dem Computer also mitteilen,
dass er offene Dateien schließen soll. Danach kann das USB-Gerät gefahrlos abgesteckt werden.
Entsorgung
Entsorgen Sie das Produkt am Ende seiner Lebensdauer gemäß den geltenden gesetzlichen
Bestimmungen.

The product allows the connection of an IDE device (e.g. an IDE hard disk) to the interface of a computer.

Features
• The converter can be directly plugged into the 40-pole connection of the IDE device
• USB2.0 compatible (can also be operated on USB1.1 port, but then only with USB1.1 speed)
• LED output on the converter for access display (read/write)
Safety Instructions
In the case of any damages which are caused due to failure to observe these operating
instructions, the guarantee will expire! We do not assume liability for resulting
damages!
Nor do we assume liability for damage to property or personal injury, caused by
improper use or the failure to observe the safety instructions. The guarantee will
expire in any such case!
The unauthorized conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible because of
safety and approval reasons (CE).
The design of the mains plug complies with safety class 2. As a voltage source only a proper
power socket (230V~/50Hz) of the public power supply system may be used.
The product is not a toy. Keep devices which are operated via the mains voltage out of reach
of children! Be especially careful if children are around.
Do not leave packaging material unattended. It might become a dangerous toy for children!
The product is intended for use in dry indoor locations, it must not get damp or wet! It can
cause perilous electric shock danger!
Handle the product carefully and do not drop it, knocks, blows or even a fall from a low height
can damage it.
Preparations & Assembly
• The IDE device must be set to "MASTER" (MA). To this purpose, set the jumper on the IDE device.
Observe the operating instructions of the IDE device or the adhesive labels on the IDE device. You can
also find in Internet the corresponding information at the manufacturer's site. When setting "SLAVE"
(SL) or "CABLE SELECT" (CS) the IDE device is not recognized!
• Connect the IDE-USB converter to the IDE device.
Make sure that the socket board of the converter is correctly connected to the 40 pins of the
IDE output of the IDE device. The socket board of the converter may be a little smaller than
the plug connector on the IDE device; attach the conveter correctly.
• Set the On/Off switch on the converter to the position "OFF". Connect the power supply terminal on the
converter and on the IDE device to the corresponding outputs of the converter contained in the delivery.
Do not use force.
• The connector provides a connection for a LED, which can display the write/read accesses onto the
connected hard disk. If you want to use the connection, make sure to pay attention to the correct polarity
of the LED (+/Positive and -/Negative). Note the imprint on the adapter. If the LED does not light by
subsequent read/write accessing, pull out the LED plug from the converter and insert it again after having
turned it by 180°.
• Connect the low voltage jack on the converter to the low voltage plug of the plug mains unit contained in
the delivery. Then plug the plug mains unit in an appropriate mains socket (230V~/50Hz).
Driver installation
• With Windows 98/98SE, the driver contained in the delivery must be installed on the CD first. Afterwards
a new start is necessary.
• With Windows ME or XP, the necessary driver is already installed in the operating system. The CD
contained in the delivery is not necessary.
Connection to the computer
• After switching the computer on, wait until the operating system is completely loaded.
• Connect the USB socket on the converter via a USB cable to a free USB2.0 port of your computer.
• Set the switch on the converter to the position "ON". Windows recognizes the new hardware and continues
the installation of the driver.
• If you are using a CD or a DVD drive with the converter, the drive is displayed in Windows File Explorer
as a new drive.
• On the other hand, a hard disk must be partitioned and formatted first before you can use it as datastore.

Partitioning and formatting hard discs which are connected via USB is effected via the computer
w w w. c o n r a d . c o m administration with Windows XP. The latter is found in the computer management of Windows (Start >
Settings > Control Panel > Management > Computer Management > Datastore > Disc Management).
With windows 98SE or ME, the MSDOS commands "FDISK" and "FORMAT" must be used for partitioning

and formatting; they can be entered in a MS DOS window. Do not format already existing partitions on
the hard disk of your system!
Handling
The product is only to be used in dry indoor locations.
Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold room into a warm one. Condensation
water that forms might destroy your device.
Leave the product switched off and wait until it has reached room temperature. This can take several
hours.
Make sure the insulation of the whole product is neither damaged nor destroyed. The housing must not be
opened! Any maintenance or repair work must be performed by authorized personnel only.
Check the product for damage before each use!
If you detect any damage, DO NOT connect the product to the power supply! There
might be danger of life involved!
Safe operation must be presumed to be no longer possible, if
- the device exhibits visible damage,
- the device does not operate any longer and
- unit was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time or
- device was exposed to extraordinary stress caused by transport.
If you do not use the product for a longer while, unplug the power cord.
The following unfavorable conditions are to be avoided at the place of installation or during transport:
- wetness or too high air humidity
- extreme hot and cold temperatures
- dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- strong vibrations
- strong magnetic fields such as near machines or loudspeakers
When installing the device, make sure the cables are not bent or jammed.
Tips and Notes
• It is irrevelant which USB port of the PC you are using, since all connections have equal access. If you
regularly plug-in and unplug USB devices, you should make sure that the device is always plugged in the
same USB port. Otherwise, a new installation of the driver might be necessary.
• Of course you can also operate the IDE device connected to the adapter on a USB1.1 port (eg when there
is no USB2.0 port). However, in this case only USB1.1 speed can be achieved during data transmission
(effectively max. approx. 1MByte/s).
• For USB2.0 operation no special „USB2.0 cables" are necessary. Conventional USB cables are quite
sufficient, but they need to be shielded. If you should notice transmission problems when operating
USB2.0 devices, you can try a USB cable which has been tested for USB2.0 operation („USB2.0 certified")
or a shorter USB cable.
• USB operation is not possible in the protected mode of Windows.
• For bigger IDE hard disks (>137GByte), use an appropriate operation system (e.g. Windows XP with
Service Pack 2). Older operation systems cannot handle such big hard disks. If more than 137GBytes
must be copied on a 200Gbytes hard disk, you might end up losing all you data. When exceeding
137GBytes, new data is written again at the beginning of the hard disk.
Windows 9x/ME is normally not able to handle such big hard disks. Partitioning into smaller subsets does
not help!
• USB2.0 devices are hot swappable, they can be plugged-in and -out during operation. This means you
don't need to switch your PC off when you want to plug devices in or unplug them (with other interfaces
this can cause damage e.g. when you plug a PS/2 mouse in or unplug it during operation).
However, If data is being transmitted on the USB port and you pull out the USB plug, data might be lost;
reformatting the hard disk might therefore be necessary.
• With some USB devices (e.g.external hard disks) an icon with an arrow is displayed in the menu bar. Via
this function you can „separate" the USB device from the PC and therefore tell the PC to close open files.
Afterwards, the USB device can be unplugged.
Disposal
Dispose of the unserviceable product according to the relevant statutory regulations!
