WLAN Router Stick
Item-No. 97 22 23

Intended Use

The WLAN Router Stick is intended for connection to a computer's USB port (or a USB hub
connected to the computer) for use as a WLAN Router/Access Point or as a conventional USB
WLAN stick.
This product complies with the applicable National and European requirements. All names of
companies and products are the trademarks of the respective owner. All rights reserved.
Included in the package
• WLAN Router Stick
• Operating Instructions
Features
• USB connection, USB2.0
• WLAN-Standard 802.11b/g
• Operates as WLAN Router/Access point or as a WLAN stick
• Driver/software is integrated in the device
Installation of driver/software
• A special feature of the WLAN router stick, is that the driver and the software are integrated in
the device. During initial operation, the memory integrated in the WLAN router stick will be dis-
played as a CD drive in the file manager.
For safety reasons, please copy all data from the new displayed drive into a
directory on your hard disk.
If the installation program does not start automatically, open the file manager of Windows and
start the program „Autoinstall.exe" (the name might differ for newer versions of the installation
software).
Follow all the software instructions. Select „Windy31 Configuration Tool" and, in the next window,
„Optimize for WiFi Mode".
• After completion of the driver and software installation, the memory of the WLAN router stick
will be hidden and Windows recognises the new hardware, which will now be installed auto-
matically.
This process may take a while; wait until the software informs you that the installation has been
completed.
Please note:
If you are using a firewall or antivirus software, various messages will be shown
saying that the WLAN router stick, for example, wants to function as an Internet
server.
These device functions must be enabled, otherwise the product cannot work
correctly!
• In the Windows task bar as well as the list of installed programs (start menu), there is now a
new symbol that allows you to configure the WLAN router stick.
Router/Access Point Mode
Functional description: The WLAN router stick is connected to a computer with Internet access.
This might be a computer with wired Internet access (e.g. if the computer is connected to a DLS
router) or a computer with radio Internet access (e.g. a notebook with UMTS).
Up to 32 other devices with WLAN (computer, PDA, game consoles and so on) can now access
the Internet via the first computer's Internet connection.
The access restriction is via the MAC address of the WLAN devices, which must be entered into
a list in the WLAN router stick.
This means that with the corresponding configuration, only WLAN devices with valid MAC
address can access the Internet via the first computer (to which the WLAN router stick is
connected).
The IP addresses will be assigned automatically by the WLAN router stick, in the address range
192.168.33.x (where x = 2....254). The subnet mask will be set to 255.255.255.0; the standard
gateway is 192.168.33.1.
For this reason, it is necessary for each computer or WLAN device to be set up so that it is
assigned an IP address automatically.
With the software of the WLAN router stick (NOT in the operating system!) you only need to set
up a bridge connection („BRIDGE") between the WLAN router stick and the network connection
responsible for the Internet connection (e. g. LAN or WLAN).
Proceed as follows:
www.conrad.com
• If not done already, turn on the computer to which the WLAN router stick is connected and
installed (see „Installation of the driver/software").
• Start the configuration software (either via the symbol in the menu bar or the start menu).
Version 05/09
°
• Now, all WLAN devices in the closer proximity should appear in the list of MAC addresses (in
the example above „00-1F-1F-1A-0E-9A").
• To add a device with a MAC address, select „Access Control" in the upper frame; the input
window for MAC addresses appears:
• Select „Allow all" at the top right corner and enter the MAC address in the field „MAC address"
(without hyphens; numbers and lower case letters are sufficient). With „Add", the MAC address
you entered will be saved in the address list.
„Allow all" - only the entered MAC addresses will have access to the internet
„Reject all" - the entered MAC addresses will be blocked
„Disable" - Access to the Internet deactivated
• Confirm the entry with the „Apply" button and click on „OK".
It is very unlikely that there are two devices with the same MAC address in the proximity of the
WLAN router stick. In addition to an encryption (WPA2 recommended), this the protection
against unauthorised WLAN access to the Internet is improved.
With this simple method, and even without any encryption that is „difficult to set up", it is
possible to enable an Internet connection for given computers or WLAN devices and to block
all other devices.
• To establish the connection between the WLAN router stick and the Internet, click on „Bridge
Adapter" below. Afterwards, the network connection can be selected that is already using the
existing Internet connection.
After confirmation, the WLAN router stick establishes an internal connection between itself and
the network card used for the Internet (e. g. a LAN adapter, another WLAN adapter or also a
UMTS connection).
• If everything has been configured correctly, you can now access the Internet with other
computers that are connected to the WLAN router stick via WLAN.
The MAC address of a computer's network card can be displayed in Windows
XP/Vista by using the prompt and entering the command „ipconfig/all" (e.g. cha-
racter string „B4-34-54-23-A3-C2"). Often this data is also indicated on the WLAN
device!
